Vitamin D

I’ve just had some routine blood results back and been told that whilst my levels are normal, they would recommend I purchase a over the counter vitamin D supplement for 3 months. When I asked the GP more, they were a bit imprecise about what dose I should take and what a good target level with someone with SLE.

They finally came back and just quoted the standard NHS advice of 10 micrograms a day.

Just wondered if anyone here takes supplements and if you had any advice. 😊

I’ve been vitamin D deficient since I’ve been about 10 - I’ve always taken supplements at 25ug, and this has just about kept my levels above the deficient line. You can get these from boots or Holland and Barrett x

Mine are prescribed. I've been asked to buy my own but like you I wasn't sure of the dose and I need to know its properly monitored.

Low levels were picked up by a rheumatologist some years ago, I was feeling unwell. Had to go to hospital for capsules to start with and then I was prescribed supplements that I'll have to take for the rest of my life.

My body doesn't make vit D any more, sunshine doesn't make any difference so when family tell me to sit in the sun......well as the nurse said, what's the point. Plus I burn easily, very frustrating when family members sit and soak it up, then they visit with lovely suntans and I'm pasty faced.

My son buys his own, he's tried various places depending on how many you can get for your money. I'd go with the NHS standard if I were you xxx

Hi. My GP prescribes Colecalciferol one per day (800u/day). They seem to work for me.

I am in the same situation and asked what types people took a couple of weeks ago - lots of people said get them in prescription but am told there’s no need and it’s another prescription charge

My rhemy said start at 10 and see how I go for a couple of months as you can always increase the dose

Hope that helps

Ah, I'm of an age where I don't pay for prescriptions. I do have a very good GP though.

Yes I take vit D. Have done for years. Generally a good idea if you stay out of the sun, which I do.

Yes I take over the counter vit D. Can’t remember the dose but it’s the daily recommended. I’ll have a look
