I've read that mushrooms might trigger flares for lupus patients. How accurate is this theory?
This wasn't a concern for me previously as I've never really liked the things, however, over the years I've grown to like them so would like to know if it's safe for us to eat them.

Hi Surferguy, I don’t know if this helps, but I’ve been taking a mushroom supplement during this pandemic and I have felt fine. I am also on hydroxychloroquine 400 mg a day, prednisone 5 mg a day, and a couple other meds unrelated to lupus. Take care,!Nan
Google it, there are a lot of mainstream articles out there. I started taking a low-dose on the advice of a physician. It’s not good to take a high dose if you have lupus because it is in immune system stimulator. It’s good for preventing dementia, treating some kinds of cancers, stimulating the immune system for traveling. They’re interesting substances. Take care.
Sorry Jackpot67 this is something I read a while back. I've always felt the same as you after I have mushrooms, but don't know whether it's a psychological thing due to what I read.
I've had a heap of shrooms tonight so will see how I feel over the next few days.
Well, the morning after the night before, and after a glutnous consumption of mushrooms all seems to be well so far. But as we all know all too well, symptoms are normally delayed so will monitor over the next few days.
I used to hate mushrooms, but with age they've grown on me if flavoured well. And they're great for veges as they add that little something flavourwise to dishes like scrambled Tofu.
Absolutely. I was a huge meat lover but had to disassociate what was on my plate from the animals I loved. Then my conscience just got me so I stopped. It will be two years in August. I still have the Pavlovian response to a fillet steak, bacon and gravy but I have managed not to succumb. I did try going Vegan but I was just exhausted all the time so I do eat a little butter and some cheese.
That's brilliant I have an absolute heap load of vege and vegan recipes to share. Also, check out Bosh.tv. These boyz are brilliant (although they do need to discover salt!)
I have two of the Bosh boys books. I made their version of cottage pie last week using mushrooms whereas I normally use Quorn. I love Matt The Dirty Vegan too. I have about three hundred cookery books I cannot help myself I love them. I love baking too and bread making. I have a lovely malted loaf with pumpkin seeds proving now
My loaf is on its second prove and I have an apple sponge in the oven and homemade custard on the stove. I love focaccia too. Yesterday I made ciabatta with wild garlic to have with my homemade minestrone soup.
Must be a coincidence but I had mushrooms last night and have woken in a terrible flare. I'm in agony!!! Never had a problem with 'shrooms before! Garlic has always been my downfall!
Everybody's triggers are different. People with lupus need to avoid things they are allergic to because it stimulates the immune system into overdrive.
Many people are allergic to yeasts, molds, and fungus, and mushrooms are a fungus. If you're not allergic and ate them before with no problem you should be OK with mushrooms. You can always get tested for food allergies if you want to be safe.
I am allergic to mold, but I've never had trouble with mushrooms at all. I don't eat them daily, but don't avoid them either.
Yes... as in mold and mildew that grows in wet environments (bathrooms), can grow on food and bread, is in certain types of cheese (blue cheese, brie, old cheese in refrigerator etc.) and berries. Both mold and mildew are types of fungi.
