Therapeutic arts and crafts

In response to KrazyKat’s post yesterday I find it SO therapeutic to knit, crochet and sew. The results are not always very professional, but hey who cares? I enjoy making things and get a sense of satisfaction from them. It is also wonderful to see A smile appear on the face of those I give them to as well.

Here are a few things I made this summer on hot sunny days when staying indoors was the best thing to do. All the sewn items are made from recycled materials (old dresses, tops etc.) so each has a story to tell. I’ve now bought an old Singer hand-operated sewing machine that can be taken outside to a shady spot for future sunny summer days, so I can enjoy the garden. Items made and posted by Kat, Barbara and Stiff are fabulous and I’m sure there are more Lupies who enjoy making things and feel better for it.

Keep it up Lupies!

Yes, I’m sure they all get up and jump all over the cushion when I’m not around. 😉😄 I’ll have to find homes for them! 💕

Ha, ha, like the movie Toy Story, or like Winney the Pooh, they all come to life when you’re asleep or away.😉

They are lovely! I took up sewing just over a year ago and enjoy making bags. Having something to pick up and concentrate on is certainly good for me as I tend to overthink x

I completely agree that sewing is a great distraction from our symptoms and worries.👍🏻 I find all my crafts absorbing and fun with something to show for the time you spend on it. I’d love to see your bags! 🥰 Spotty

They look great! I also knit and last week bought myself a new singer sewing machine not sure what I'll sew but I'm sure I'll fine something to do I'm thinking of taking up quilting it helps to take the mind off of all the other things we have to deal with.👍

Spotty-ewe in reply to 1573

Hi 1573,

I’m sure you’ll enjoy sewing with your new machine as the results are much quicker than knitting and crochet. Quilting is not something I’ve tried but I have done patchwork again using up-cycled materials from favourite clothes of my Mum’s and mine so that each patch brings back a memory. 🥰Have fun with your machine and let me know how you get on. 😘

1573 in reply to Spotty-ewe

Hi Spotty-ewe that's a good idea about up cycled material I'll give it a go anything to lift the mind of our daily routine of meds and dr apts. 😘

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to 1573

The great thing about up-cycled material is if you make a hash of it (as I often do) it hasn’t cost you anything. 🤫 But when a success the memories attached to the item you make is an added bonus. 👍🏻🥰

Good luck and have fun! 🤗 Spotty

Hi S-E, I have SCLE, SS, osteopenia, multi other conditions as per and had breast cancer 10 years ago. Since childhood I always enjoyed crafts, especially knitting, When I'm able, I make toys and items for Addenbrookes Charitable Trust. I ask for the proceeds to be split between the neonatal unit and cancer units. Like many of us, I spent the Summer indoors too. I love your hand sewing machine outside in the shade!! What a fantastic idea. Here's to more happy seasonal crafting to come for everyone who finds joy in their makes. My best to everyone. 💖💖

What a rotten time you’ve had of it, but eager to help others which is very admirable. 👍🏻 And what you make will bring pleasure to others as well as to you in the making of them. Yes, it is wonderful how much pleasure crafting brings as well as keeping our fingers and wrists exercised - not to mention brain! 😉 Best wishes, Spotty 💕

Oh my goodness! What a lovely, loving bundle of fun!

After cancer, when I knit myself hats to keep a bald head warm, I unknit the hats and made presents for the people who helped me through it. It was such a healing experience. These cute guys remind me of that time. 💕

Hi Panda,

Sorry to hear about your cancer. I hope you are keeping ok now. Lovely idea to make presents with the unknitted hats for your supporters. They will always remind them of you and the valiant fight you had with big C. Love and hugs 🥰🤗 Spotty 💕

Hi Spotty

This has gotta be called something...maybe Lupies Got Talent?

I love your little creatures...n all made from recycled materials...marvellous!!

I totally agree that when we're housebound because of the lovely summer weather...it helps to have something to do..everyone else seems to be out enjoying the sunshine but with us..sun has to be avoided!! My mum had an old singer sewing machine when I was a kid (many years ago) n I smile at the thought of u sewing under a tree!! 🌳

It feels so good to be able to do something when there's so much that we're unable to do..thank u for sharing your art with us!!

What a productive artistic bunch we r xx

Hi Kat,

Lupies Got Talent sounds perfect! 👏🏻 I love it. There are some VERY talented Lupies out there including you Kat.

Thanks for your kind words regarding my wee creatures. It was such fun making them.

Yes, I look forward to sitting under a tree next summer sewing away while others are frolicking around in the sun. At least I’ll be outside enjoying the fresh air and birdsong. That’s if we get a sunny summer - not always guaranteed in these parts. 🌦

I feel fine after the walk (thanks to the steroids!) Thanks for asking. However I did feel a bit shaky during my Body Balance class today🙆‍♀️ so maybe not as fully recovered as I thought.

I’ve printed off your wonderful poem which has been enjoyed by friends. Thanks again for that! Another of your talents!!

Perhaps a Lupies Got Talent exhibition is in order! 👩‍🎨✍🏻🧵✂️🧶

Take care Kat 🤗 Spotty

They are all wonderful . It’s great to think of us all beavering away indoors when everyone else is out in the sunshine. I’ll think of that next time I’m shut away in my craft room (aka son’s old bedroom!).

Spotty-ewe in reply to Barbara17

Thanks Barbara. Yes, it is good to know we Lupies are not alone in our industrious indoor pastimes during sunny weather so we can think of other Lupies doing the same thing in their homes.😄 But I’m going to look forward to that shady tree next year! 😉

Hi they are wonderful and great that all from recyclable materials the sewn ones. I like to crochet but am useless at knitting 🧶 I bought my daughter a large weaving frame which we are going to attempt one day with old clothing cut up 😂 I spent most of summer indoors too and felting when I could, I have just finished a large hare with mouse on his back today it’s taken me 6 months because of health hindering progress but finally done so now hope to work on some Xmas gifts. My dad wants a life size pigeon 😂 it’s great mind therapy isn’t it. Keep up the good work, so many artists on here🙌🏻 I can see how they put a smile on recipients faces, they made me smile too. That sounds good that you will be able to get outside next year with sewing machine . 🙏

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to stiff19

Lovely to hear from you Stiff. Thanks for the compliment - I’m so pleased they made you smile. 😣Your lion was fantastic, so I’m sure we’d all love to see your hare and mouse! I hope your Dad isn’t going to try to fly the pigeon when you make it for him! 😂

Yes, I’m looking forward to working outside in the shade next summer as long as the weather is dry enough!🤞

Good luck to you and your daughter with the weaving frame. Cutting up old clothes to use on it will be a real work-out for your hands!👍🏻✂️ Let us know how it goes. 🤗 Spotty 💕

stiff19 profile image
stiff19 in reply to Spotty-ewe

Nice to hear from you too👍 I hope he doesn’t try to fly it, it sure won’t be winning any races 🤪 but at least it won’t be talking all the time, I have an African grey who chats constantly 😂

Here’s hoping we have a good dry windless summer next year so you can enjoy your machine outside.

Yes I think my husband will come in useful there, and he can do the cutting of materials , he has no excuse for xmas last year he bought me some great Fiskars scissors ✂️ Luckily my daughter finds it fun brushing the wool for me once washed 🙏🙌🏻 I must add she loved your cat you made 👍

Yes great of krazykat to open the post to see everyone’s therapeutic work and get to speak to each other 🙌🏻 I will post a pic and equally post more of what you do

👍🙏

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to stiff19

Haha. I bet the pigeon would win a prize if he’s as good as the lion, but not for racing eh? 😂 I’ve had budgies in the past first one called Shelly and the last one Eros. They were both great talkers and each lived out of their cage all day long sitting on a perching frame my hubby made. I missed Shelly so much my God-daughter gave me Eros and now I miss him too. They each lived to just under 9 years old. I guess parrots live longer? I hope so anyway. 🤞🙏🏻

Good to hear your hubby and daughter help with preparation for your crafts. 👍🏻 Pleased your daughter liked the cat. I’m planning to make a twin for it.😉

Thanks for your kind wishes for next summer and I look forward to seeing more of your work posted. 🥰 I’ll keep you posted (excuse the pun) on my progress too. 😊 🤗💕

stiff19 profile image
stiff19 in reply to Spotty-ewe

I had to do a new post for you to see I can’t add pic to reply🙈ah bless Thankyou. Luckily we had a racing pigeon here for 3 days about a month ago so I took some photos , it turned up at a job my hubby on (builder) exhausted.he phoned the number on its foot ring and the man asked could we keep it a couple of days to recover then let it go to fly home, we did, we fed and watered and then let him go at 9am on Saturday. At 3pm it was at our back door 😂🙌🏻🙌🏻 The man sent courier to collect it 😂. My African grey is 14 yrs, apparently live to 75 🙏 she talks in my voice so told my son if he takes her on when I’m gone it will be like me still with him 😂 or haunting him 😂😂 shes a sweet heart 💓 I had a budgie before I love them , but then I love animals one and all, my passion in life 😃 yes keep us posted would love to see the twin 🙌🏻🙌🏻😂🥰

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to stiff19

Just looked at your post. Absolutely fantastic! 👍🏻👌 You are so talented! I’ve left a comment about the wonderful hare and mouse there. Thanks for posting it Stiff.👍🏻👍🏻

The pigeon was SO lucky to find loving people to look after him until he recovered. He obviously knew when he was onto a good thing and that’s why he came back!! 😂

I thought parrots lived to a good old age. So funny she has your voice- she’ll give your son quite a start when you’ve gone. Eros gave an estate agent a fright when he was left alone in the lounge while I went to make him a cuppa. He said in my voice, “What are you doing? You naughty boy!” The agent hadn’t even noticed Eros sitting there on his perching frame until then! 🤣

I love all animals too - they bring us so much pleasure and expect so little in return.

Take care Stiff and thanks again for sharing. 🤗😘Spotty💕

Thankyou, I don’t know about talent but I just think you tend to do well at the things you enjoy, and I know and love animals so do them. It started from drawing pet portraits , then a woman said she’d like a felt done and asked if I do it. I hadn’t heard of it but looked it up and said I’d give it a go, and never stopped after that 😂😂

I can’t do people well at all 🙈🙈

That’s hilarious 😂 I bet his face was a treat 😂 sounds like mine she says where you going, what you doing, what you got. Bed times best she says nite nite doll, see you in morning 😂 I love the name Eros 🙌🏻

Oh yes my dog is my best friend and he knows when I’m suffering and stays close by, he’s spoilt rotten but like you say they give you so much. He’s gotten arthritic in his older years so we’re good at looking after each other , only vets seem better at diagnosing than docs 😂😂

Thankyou again Best wishes and lovely to meet/ talk to you 🙏

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe in reply to stiff19

Lovely to get to know you too Stiff. 🥰 Thank goodness that woman asked you to do a felt - it must have been a latent talent you had waiting to be discovered! 😉

I’ve had 6 cats, a dog and 2 budgies over the years and miss them all. As you say they are your best friend, accept you whatever you look like, sound like or even smell like - always there for you and sense when you need their comfort. 🤗 We don’t have a pet at present as we like to go away for a night or two at the drop of a hat, so until we are no longer able to do that we’ll remain without a pet as it wouldn’t be fair on them. BUT I still miss them! ❤️😇

Take care Stiff 😘 Best wishes, Spotty💕

You come across as a lovely lady so not surprised you also an animal lover 🥰

Thankyou you are very kind, I’m probably quite talented in arts cos I’m useless at everything else 😂 most importantly I enjoy it and that’s why I get upset with health which interferes greatly with just life.

I’ve always had animals all my life, even as a child my parents had pets. In my life I’ve had 9 dogs including my present one, 4 horses, a minor bird, cockatiel, parrot, 2 budgies, fish, chickens (miss the eggs) 2 chinchillas, a rabbit, guinea pigs, hamsters wow I’ve had a few. 😂 now just a dog and parrot .🥰 yes I fortunately go nowhere so ok and on odd occasion I have my lovely son comes home to look after them if for day or two 🙌🏻 I bet you do miss them and will be another lucky pet if ever you got another 👍

Nice on here we have other things in common besides our health problems 🙌🏻

Best wishes 🙏🐶🐦💐

Yes, it is lovely to meet people with similar views, interests and loves as well as health problems on here. 🙋‍♀️ It really makes me feel I’m not alone in every sense of the word. The pets I’ve mentioned are those I’ve had since marrying. As a child and into early adulthood we always had hens and ducks at home, 7 cats, 3 dogs and 2 rabbits over the years. I also rescued a wood pigeon I found on a cycle track as a teenager which I released when it was well enough - it never came back to see us. 😕Although it made my knees knock with fear I confronted a man who was thrashing a donkey in Egypt and another who had his dog tied up in the sun with no water - he moved it to the shade. I can’t abide cruelty of any kind, and can’t seem to stop myself speaking out. 😤 I’ve always loved animals wild or tame and I always wanted a pony of my own as a child but my parents couldn’t afford one. But I spent time with friends who had ponies and enjoyed riding them and grooming them.😊 That must have been woderful having your 4 horses. I love that animals are not judgemental and yet they can tell the difference between people with a good heart and those who haven’t.! Even if we are not able to have the number of pets we once did, you’ll have happy memories like I do of the many pets we’ve had and the joy they have brought to our lives.🥰 Lupus prevented me carrying my babies full term, but my pets and my pupils, when I was teaching, have filled the void. 👫🐶🐈 I look forward to loving and cuddling another pet in the future.🤗

Lovely ‘speaking’ with you Stiff. Take care. 😘 Spotty 💕

Yes most definately spotty , it is Such a relief to come on here and not feel so alone with health probs. I’ve been reading and see what awful problems you’ve had with health in life and you have my hearts best wishes and how you remain a lovely person is a testament 🥰 I fear I am getting bitter with no answers to mine 😂 all these head / face probs are scaring me at the moment and getting worse so can’t wait to see neurologist now though wonder if is vascular as could well be I guess. Eyes are blurry even with glasses last two days 😩

So glad you can’t control yourself either with animal cruelty I am the same, they need a voice without one of their own so well done. I upset two dog owners this summer as one left a dog panting in the car in heat, he just gave me a lot of mouth and left the dog so I made a phone call and the police came and dealt with it. Funny he didn’t treat them the same but I didn’t mind that at least they got the dog out and prosecuted him. Then another walking along haired dog in afternoon boiling heat and poor dog could barely keep pads on hot tarmac. Some people 🤬

Horses were my life, I only ever owned one, but back in the day 🤣 I practically lived on a couples Smallholding (farm really ) every night and every weekend with a couple of other girls and in return for helping with all animals and work were given a horse to keep and it was better than owning as we (parents) couldn’t afford it and we’d also get taken to all the shows in horse box etc. Best days of my life😍 did the cross country at Windsor , and many rosettes from local jumping shows such fun. Unfortunately years later back probs and op stopped it all but I still enjoy watching and still have great memories 😀 my daughter asks what’s your favourite animal but I have no answer I love them all .

So sorry for your void, truly I am but so pleased you able to fill it 🥰

On your post about names, I chose stiff, as that’s how I feel a lot , hands feet back neck face 🙈 19 as the year I joined here. My friends even years older than me say I’m old fashioned, and set in my ways so stiff seemed appropriate 😂😂 Funny I don’t talk to friends about health only on here, other than them asking me, especially hands face back noticeable , but I try to keep off the subject🙈 that’s strange just talking to you made me realise that. Maybe because social life dwindled and lost a few friends as can’t often go out and socialise when bad and they then stop bothering asking, but hey they weren’t good friends I guess in that case to start with 😂

Wishing you well , ooh do you miss Australia? I’ve never been, I spent a long time in New Zealand though and loved it there 😀

Best wishes 🙏💐

Spotty-ewe profile image
Spotty-ewe

Sounds like we are kindred spirits!🤝 Well done reporting that awful man who left his poor dog in the hot car and confronting the other man. 👍🏻 Are they thick or just uncaring? 🤷‍♀️ I wish more people spoke out on behalf of the animals - it would stop some of the cruelty I’m sure.

What lovely memories with the horses. Most of my contact with ponies was in Australia where 2 of my friends had their own. Happy days! It is good we have these memories to cherish. I miss the Australia I knew but unless you go to the Outback now it has changed so dramatically elsewhere. High rise buildings and concrete jungles have replaced the banana plantations and strawberry farms where I grew up. The bush I used to explore as a child and its wildlife (koalas, roos and wallabies, possums and wombats) has all gone. Progress they call it, extremely sad I call it. 😢

Thanks for your kind words regarding my void. My hubby has 1 daughter and 2 grandchildren in Australia but sadly we rarely see them. My condition with certain complications makes flying very difficult for me now. But never mind, at least these days we have Skype.

You must miss NZ too. Whereabouts were you? I’d love to go and explore some day, but unlikely to happen now.

I’m so sorry to hear of the worrying problems you are experiencing at present. I hope the Neurologist is able to give you some answers. 🙏🏻 It is the not knowing that is the worst thing. I’ll keep my fingers crossed the medics get to the bottom of it.🤞

I love why you chose your username regarding being set in your way and old fashioned. Well, that makes too of us! 😂 If friends have deserted you because you can’t get out and about easily now, then they were worth losing. I’ve lost a few too but those who have remained are genuine and special. And now we’re making some new friends on here too who truly understand us. 😉

Let me know how you get on Stiff and know I’ll be thinking of you and wishing the very best outcome for you. 🙏🏻😘🤗

yes I’m afraid some people are just thoughtless and cruel but like you I can’t stand by ignorant to that 😩 I was in Rotorua in the north for a year but believe that has changed too, as has London drastically , well everywhere I guess, unfortunately not for the better, 😭 man is his own worst enemy and all for greed.😢 yes it’s great to have some good memories 👍

Thankyou I hope to get some answers soon or at some point it’s getting too much now , with the support on here I feel I can get there or at least cope better as I had a bad patch which got me real down , but even if cyber as krazykat says it 🙌🏻 It’s the best support I’ve had 👍 with a bonus of some lovely kind people like yourself . Thankyou so much , I wish all good things your way and been lovely to talk to you. Take care 🥰🙏
