Losing Weight

Hello, I hope you are all well this Sunday morning.

I’m hoping someone may be able to advise me on weight loss, I suffer from PCOS & Lupus SLE, I have struggled massively the last 4/5 years with my weight. Due to symptoms from Lupus it’s very difficult to do the gym and classes. I used to do a class which worked but I ended up having a flare after every class and my whole body was in bad pain.

I try healthy eating, but I just feel I’m getting know where fast. It does bring me down. I am around 4 stone heavier than I should be, so I do have a lot to loose. It’s hard to even get a couple of pounds off never mind stones.

If any of you have any tips, on foods, workouts, anything at all that may help me I would be so grateful !!

Thank you :) x

Hi, try Slimming World you can download lots of information on PinIntetest, free, the basic concept of it, lots of recipes ect...

If you can join their nearest group, unfortunately there’s none where I live, that’s why PinIntetest is a godsend.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what drugs you are on - but over on my home forum where we are all on steroids many have found that low carb eating is about the only way to manage this sort of weight problem. Not keto - but low carbs which is healthy and easy to do we find. This site is a good basis to work out how to go about it:

dietdoctor.com/low-carb

I managed to lose 35+lbs even though I couldn't exercise (on crutches at the time plus PMR doesn't encourage doing much with the sore muscles and fatigue) and was on over 10mg/day pred. Since then I have managed to maintain my weight pretty well though I could do with losing a bit more now. I have to stick to fairly low carbs to lose, maintaining is much easier. Everyone is differnt, some can lose while eating more carbs than others but often healthy eating involves a lot of fruit and there is a lot of sugar hiding there sometimes.

Good luck!

Hi PMRpro, hope you are okay today.

I'm having the opposite side of the coin, eating healthy but losing weight without wanting or needing to. Maybe you can give some to me as the old bone's are starting to stick out and the size 10 jeans are sliding down the hips.

Maybe you are eating TOO healthily!! Have you discussed it with your GP?

Yes and they have no idea either the only healthy eating I do is the meat and vegetables everything else is open season to me LOL so I've not been trying to lose weight. Gone from a size 18-20 down to a 10 being a bit loose in 18 months. Rheumy thought I was a bit scrawny last time he saw me god knows how he will describe me tomorrow. Plus I actually eat more than my husband and he's not skinny.

Oh well I'll have to see what happens tomorrow.

What medication are you on? I have to say - it's a problem I wouldn't mind having! I'm up for fat transplants - as a donor of course ;)

The meds I'm on at the moment are Hydroxychloroquine, ventalin, fostaire, spivira, corbocisteine, Omeprazole and Zapain and glyceryl trinitate when needed, oh and vit D 800iu.

Hopefully I won't be getting any more. So the only steroid is the fostaire inhaler.

Not sure what's going on any more as they have tested my TSH and although it's towards the bottom end of the range it doesn't look like they are taking that any further.

Guess I've not got skinny enough yet and GP keeps saying I'm not eating enough meat and vegetables, yeah right! Maybe I'll have to invite them to dinner so they can see for themselves what I'm eating and whilst here they can check the cupboards and fridge. The only thing I can't eat is a dam good fry up as it plays havoc with me. At least that keeps the cholesterol levels down as I'd go insane if I couldn't have real butter and cheese. Good thing I like my bacon grilled so I can still have a BLT. Lol. Just talking about it and I want one.

Horror has been expressed in the Guardian today that the NHS serves BACON - with CANCER causing chemicals! OH (former NHS) says it is because at least the patients eat it ;) Seems less awful than listeria-carrying chicken sandwiches...

Good job I cook my own bacon till it's crispy.

But on the serious side a lot of hospitals don't even prepare and cook anymore and have it all done off site and just heat it up before chucking the stuff at the patient's..

As for prepackaged sandwiches? You really don't want to see some of the factories. I know some people who have worked in these places and from what they've told me alone I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. They also use mayo instead of marg so if you don't like either forget it.

If I ended up having to stay in hospital I'd disappear unless my husband or daughter bring me something that they have prepared and made. As like me they have also been chefs.

Oh I know, I know! But mercifully I don't live in the UK any more and our local hospital has a kitchen that shames some tourist hotels! They would not even OFFER a sandwich! If you need food - you get a meal. Three course just no wine ... I don't have to ask for gluten-free, it comes automatically as it is on my file. The other week I got handmade local ravioli for one meal - don't normally eat carbs but I made an exception ;) When I got a bit over-carbed and asked to speak to a dietician she was there pronto and we worked out a set of meals I liked for the weekend - and for the following days it came to a similar standard. Usually there is a choice of 3 menus, but as a special diet I'm not normally asked. But she got me mountainous salads instead of carbs :)

That's how it should be but sadly here you may get a choice but have little or no idea where and how it's made anymore as some hospital pen pushers think it's more cost effective to tender catering out. It's been proven not the case a lot of the time but then the pen pushers don't have to eat it especially when they are not well or need a specific diet due to illness or allergy. You could almost bet that they have private health insurance as well so they don't have to wait months to see a specialist or operation.

Oh well that's enough for now time for tea, now what shall I have. Cherries and ice cream, sounds good to me.

Catch you later.

My immunologist mentioned the possible correlation between gut bacteria, autoimmune disease and low fiber diets and he suggested increasing my fiber intake to over 25 grams per day. I have done this and added a brisk daily walk and in the last few months I have lost three inches around my waist. I only lost 8 pounds but I have gained muscle everywhere. The best part is my ANA dropped to insignificance and my beta2 glycoprotein antibodies dropped from over 150 to under 35. I also only eat between the hours of 9am to 7pm but I was doing this before the fiber increase without any significant changes in my BMI.

Hi, thank you for coming back to me, sorry for the late response. Some great info, over time I have been cutting down my carbs, I’ve still been eating white rice though maybe that’s next to take away.

For high intensity training I used to do, but it was causing a flare every time. I struggle with grip and strength in my hands and couldn’t manage the sessions like I used to :( I could try doing some at my own pace at home.

Thank you :) x
