A "lady" question 😳

So, last night I went to bed with all the usual fairly mild aches and pains when a new one arrived. I had a nostalgic moment. "That feels just like a period pain " thought I.

I woke a couple of times in the night feeling more cramps and to my horror this morning, there is blood!! Brown, old blood and very little of it, but blood nonetheless.

I'm 56 next week and haven't had a period for around 5 years. Is this another bl**dy Lupus thing (pardon the pun)?

Hi HeKe, am not aware that Lupus would produce the symptoms you describe. General advice however, for post menopausal women, irrespective of how little blood there is, is to see a doctor ASAP. I have just gone through this, and you may well be put on a two week urgent care protocol for your symptoms, NHS class bleeding post menopausal urgent. In my case, I had a thickened endometrium, and polyps, biopsied, all was fine. Get yourself to your GP would be my advice.

Thanks for the reply. This forum is full of such sensible, knowledgeable people! I seem to blame everything on Lupus! Following your response, I've just found advice on the NHS website. I have a GP appointment on Monday so I'll let him know.

I hope you are feeling better and the biopsy wasn't too painful. I had one a few years ago ... ouch is all I'm saying!!

Hi, I follow these posts as my daughter has lupus. I don't have lupus but did have the same post menopausal symptoms as Karen, was also fast tracked within two weeks. Ultrasound, biopsy..and very similar outcome too. I am 50. All was well. Probably can't blame Lupus this time! .. and wishing you a reassuring outcome.

Any chance you are on prednisone right now? Apparently it causing bizarre atypical bleeding. Just a thought....

Thanks for this. I'm not on prednisone but my GP has suggested steroids if Naproxen hasn't helped, which it hasn't. I'm seeing him tomorrow so I'll discuss everything with him.

I had the exact same thing happen to me, 4 yrs post last period. As others have done, I got fast tracked by my GP and had biopsies taken within the week. All fine, but something that's important to move quickly on.

Hi HeKe

I worked in gynecology and any time there is bleeding post menopause it is cause for concern. Seeing your doctor ASAP is warranted.

I hope and pray that your exam reveals nothing of concern and you live worry free in the future.

Gentle hugs and Xxx

Don't ever put all your symptoms down to Lupus just because you have Lupus.

Any post menopausal bleed needs to be taken very seriously. Go to your GP and get an urgent appointed. You will likely be fast tracked for an urgent ultra sound and a smear.

Its probably nothing but its worth getting checked. Reassurance is a great thing x

I've had great advice from everyone. Coincidentally I'm seeing my GP tomorrow morning.

Glad you are getting checked out by GP.

A question: are you currently on any HRT? If your sex hormones are not balanced, bleeding can result. Also, certain brands of generic progesterone capsules are known to cause side effects, one of which is breakthrough bleeding.

I recently had issues with bleeding (and also unrcpnsived headaches) and when I switched to namebrand Prometrium, the headaches stopped. The bleeding stopped as well BUT did return when my estrogen numbers increased so I’ve reduced my dosage of estrogen (I’m on a twice weekly patch) and the bleeding stopped once again.

Thanks, MW. I'm not on any HRT. It's fortuitous that I had a GP appointment arranged already.

Hi

I've been referred to gynae. I'm just trying to pin down the actual appointment as I am at the other end of the country next Monday when the original appointment was set.

I'll keep you posted and thanks for your kind thoughts.
