Weird bruising on fingers and toes....

I suffer from Lupus and APS and for the past few months I have been getting bruising on my fingers and toes.

It starts with a painful swelling either under my big toe or on top of my finger that lasts a couple of hours then all of a sudden the pain goes and my finger or toe has turned black.

Anyone else get this? Any ideas as to what it is or should I see my doctor?

Hello tiredmum,

I've got SLE and very mild sticky blood.

And yes: It is weird and - I wish I knew? I've developed the same thing - especially my left hand and a gruesome looking thumb. Its a tad freaky.

A specialist said it was Raynaulds ? but I've had - what I 'thought' was raynaulds effect my right toes for half a life time - this is a little different with the sudden swelling - and its tender. The toes have always just been just a bit cold and numb.

At first I thought I must have hurt my thumb/hand without realizing it. But I can now see it comes and go's.

I'll be seeking a second or third opinion - but it could well be just a new version of Raynaulds that I'm not used to. Temperature changes does seem to trigger it ??? And I'm getting the multicolored fingers of it.

Hope you get some responses from people who have experience with this.

Hello there. I have Secondary Raynaud's and get the cold colour-changing effects, but nothing I'd describe as black, more like deep blue/ purople. A visit to the doc sounds the best way to go. I hope you get some help.

Yeah ! Ditto. The black is just all wrong - at least for me.

I have had Raynauds since I was an infant and am now 46. This is a new thing over the last couple of months. I just feel a bit silly going to the docs over a bruised toe haha

Yeah..... I must admit, the specialist I spoke to kinda brushed it off, but given I have the sort of SLE that tends to gravitate to random internal organs - she had my heart checked out because I winged at her a bit hard. (have an unexplained heavy chest too) The hearts fine at least.

I do have some new-ish peripheral nerve damage so my next Doctor bothering expedition is the neurologist - I'll try annoying him with it.

My thumbs a little too weird for my liking really. It starts off as a small blueish black dot right in the middle of the inner upper thumb - then the whole upper thumb swells, go's darker - looks like its going to drop off - (same color as my toes really) then it go's back to normal. I'm also bruising generally a lot more lately so I think there's something a bit more general amiss.

It has settled a little with less weather changes so I do feel a tad ridiculous.

I don't have much in the way of outward signs of flares - so anything peculiar and external and I harass Doctors until they either come up with a real answer - or at the very least - try to make up something at least half decently believable for me. I have a GP who has figured me out - and does this for me with great confidence, but by the time I see him again - I've figured him out - or have become a little (better safe than sorry) paranoid ? - and ask more questions......

Bit of a vortex really.

Could it be a blood leak under the skin. They hurt when it happens for a little while , then just appear blue/black until it disappears after maybe a week or so. I dont know what causes it but it happens to me a lot . I think I showed a doc sometime ago when I was at appointment. He didnt make any comment !

Good luck

Hi Gcart,

I know if you take prednisolone, it can give you a greater propensity to bruise more. And yes. The no comment approach from Doctors doesn't really inspire confidence in them. Not very validating of you as a patient either.

Its taken me about a year to train my current GP to actually answer my questions. I really need to know what they're thinking because I've struck some lazy ones along the way and with SLE I don't like taking any chances.
