I am now on 20mg methotrexate and yesterday my tongue started hurting and this morning  I have woke up with a few ulcers. Is this normal?

This is a very common side effect of methotrexate (it's because of the way it works) and you should have been given folic acid tablets to take on the days you aren't taking the mtx. If you are already taking them - it means you aren't on a high enough dose and need to increase it. Not sure what the levels are though.

I am taking folic acid three days a week. Am guessing this needs increased. Thanks for reply. Only been on methotrexate  for a few months and only a few weeks on 20mg.

Then try taking it every day you aren't taking the mtx. If that doesn't work you will need a higher dose.

You have my sympathy - mouth ulcers are awful, mtx or not!

Hi adrienne

Sorry to read of your mouth ulcers. I can recommend Difflam mouthwash as it has a steroid in it and numbs their pain until they go. It can be bought over the counter or on prescription. It can only be used for a week at a time but it is very effective. Hope they improve. X

I get mouth ulcers occasionally. Also take Folic Acid every day except the day I take my Metho. Swear by Metho - it really does work for me.

Hi

I find IGLU  the best rx for my mouth ulcers. Stays put and heals underneath. Doc prescribes Hydrocortisone 2.5mg Muco-Adhesive Buccal tablets. I only use them with whoppers. You hold them in place, teeny tiny tablets, and they do work. Being steroid I use them only when I am in agony and on a large ulcer.

Good luck in reducing the misery of these awful "benefits" of Lupus. I'm not on Metho BTW but Azathioprine.
