There is a fair bit of evidence that "talking therapies" often work better in the long term. A primary reason people are put on antidepressants is the wait for talking therapies in some areas. I was lucky and eventually was able to have some sessions - and they did far more good than the pills I'd had before.

It wasn't because of lupus - but whatever you have, the fewer medications you have mixed up in your body the better. Many drugs may be OK on their own but when mixed with other medications there can be problems. Your lupus meds are important - so using talking therapy is safer, probably more effective - and NO side effects!

I've had an excellent counselor for 16 years and I couldn't do without my antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication. I have tried to reduce doses and it works for awhile until I have a flare up and then back I have to go with the increase again. I don't know where these ideas come from, but I can't help but think they are dreamed up in secluded rooms where theories are bandied about and not in the trenches where the real people live and struggle with the reality of drugs, or lack of drugs, and depression and anxiety.

Talk therapy may be useful for slight cases of depression or anxiety only.

This theory for today must come from talk therapists. Just talk away very real physical clinical depression? And how about the poor patient suffering while waiting a year or 2 for the talk therapy to be of great help? How about the suicidal patient? What about the patient that becomes suicidal while waiting and waiting for the talk therapy to work? This is not only foolishness but it's dangerous foolishness. Talk therapy has it's place, right along with medication management.
