I have been on steroids for 15 mths. I am now down to 5mg and I have not lost any weight despite not overeating, my body feels like a sponge, it is so disheartening especially in this nice weather. Has anyone ever lost weight with some help from prescribed diuretics.

I was on a high dose of steroids for 2 years now decreased to 5 mg daily. l put on 4and a half stone in less than 6 months even though l ate healthy and didn't over eat. The weight is finally coming down again and l have lost a stone and a half, bet has taken about a year, it goes on a lot faster than it comes off ! Try not to lose heart, if you have a healthy balanced diet it will come off eventually. I try to make sure to drink plenty of water hot water with fresh lemon in it , which seems to help me as l am not able to do much exercise, if l feel hungry and its not meal time, l drink water instead to fill and kid my stomach :)

I'm not using diuretics, so I'm not much help there. But I can say that diet on its own is not enough to lose the weight, you need some sort of calorie burning exercise, even if only walking briskly half hour 4 days a week. And that will help your heart anyway, so double advantage. Don't give up, you'll get there, it is a slow process but will happen.

i gained too gained loads of wait on steroids and couldn't loseit. i then got pregnant and ended up being 12 stone, im only 4ft 11 so i was somewhat chubby lol. after spending money on weight watchers, slimmers world etc and getting nowhere i sat and thought about it. the body lays down fat and uses carbohydrates when we eat as carbs are easier utilise as 'fuel'. so i started a very low to no fat diet with having just one small portion of carbs a day, such as 1 slice bread, couple of new potatoes or heaped tablespoon of rice, cous cous etc. in 6 months was down to 9 stone.the body then uses the stored fat as energgy. i also did gentle yoga exercises - just to help tone. i agree with pattismith about fresh lemon juice in water (i use cold water) it does something to help the bodys metabolism i think. i think this time of yr best to diet with all the fresh fruit and salads. try to avoid diuretics or other slimming pills as these make you lose essential water or fat soluble vitamins. i know how upsetting it is, i have been there and no doubt will be there again. happy to give you more advice on 'my diet' if you wanna give it a go. best of luck x

Me too. 4mg/day now. Planning to wean myself off completely, no matter what medics say. Side effects, including weight gain, outweigh the benefits (which are dubious anyway, at least in my case). I absolutely refuse to go up a clothing size!!!! But it's getting perilously close, and that's after only 3 months. Ghastly things. Good to know the weight loss happens eventually!

Unfortunately I don't have the stamina to exercise. And I already eat like a bird, and with virtually no carbs. Doesn't give me much room for manoeuvre!

Thanks for all your answers. I guess I am just clutching at straws in hoping the weight will just disappear quickly. I am limited in the amount of excercise I can do that combined with lack of motivation to shift this enormous weight gain makes the task more difficult. It is so depressing trying to buying suitable clothes when I can't even bear to look in the mirror. I look in the wardrobe at my pre lupus clothes and wonder will I ever wear them again. Oh well I have had my rant just have carry on till the next time I get upset.

Thank you Beckside for asking this question. I too have noticed despite the steriods being reduced (down from 60mg to 15mg), me eating reduced amount of foo (half what I used to eat), I haven't lost any weight. This issue was really getting me down :-( Thank you to everyone who has replied. I now know it will take a while to shift the extra 4 stones I put on :-) . Will definitely try the lemon and water trick!

I have lost the weight and put it back on as I am still on 10mg of Prednisolone so since the end of February I have been eating Diet Chef meals and also using the App My fitness Pal eating 1200 calories a day. This has really helped and I am now back to my original dress size. My belly is still not as flat as I would like because of the steroid, it redirect the fat in your body to your belly.

I am not ale to do any exercise so using the app means I can eat whatever I want within the 1200 calories knowing I am going to loose weight.

Hope this helps the diet chef meals are very expensive but it does help and if you just use it there is no need to count calories

Hi I've been on steroids for nine months now and only down to 30 mg a day I joined a slimming programme run by the local NHS which def helped They say you should lose on 1500kcal a day but I knew I wasn't burning up that amount So invested in a suunto heart monitor which also tells me how many cals I burn in a day I only burn 1200 cals a day so for me to lose weight I must eat less than that . I bought the cheapest one which comes in at £60 pounds I feel it is worth it to help me keep my weight off It is a constant reminder throughout the day You wear it as a watch and the heart monitor round your chest area . I prefer to cook my own food as I have so many food allergies and on that note just been checking out all info on The effect Lectins have on our body and the connection with leaky gut syndrome Lots of info when googled Hope some of that may help .Take care
