Small cell lung cancer with liver mets and malignant pleural effusion

My husband was diagnosed with SCLC in January. It was in one lung and three lymph nodes. Last Friday we went to our small A&E department as he had sharp pain in his ribs. They took an X-ray and referred him straight to hospital where they did CT scans and drained 800ml of fluid.

He was discharged from hospital yesterday coming away with the news that he has new lung tumors with Mets to liver and gall bladder plus malignant pleural effusion. We have an appointment with the oncologist on Friday to discuss next steps.

He had completed chemo in April and the scans had shown the tumors had decreased in size. He finished radiotherapy just over two weeks ago…

I asked the doctor for a prognosis but he said he couldn’t say but it wasn’t good…

I’m terrified about what the future holds and how little time we might have left…

Texas22,so sorry to read your post and see that your husband is suffering with SCLC. My late wife had difficult time with her SCLC, so really the only advice I can give is don't focus on time, enjoy every minute with your hubby and try nd make memories. Do what makes you both comfortable. God Bless you both.

Dear Texas22

So sorry to hear about the news of your husbands cancer. It is understandably a very distressing and a worrying time for you both.

It may be that the oncologist may wish to do another biopsy to see if he has any cell mutations/proteins that he may be eligible for treatments like immunotherapies or targeted therapies.

I am sorry you were left the hospital with the doctor saying 'its not good', and I assume they were not specialised in lung cancer, so perhaps wait and see what the oncologist says on Friday.

I see you live in Spain, so the health care system may be different over there as to what cancer drugs are licensed for use, but am sure they will provide great care.

Depending on what they discuss with your both on Friday, your husband may wish to consider or ask if there are any clinical trials that may benefit him.

I hope you both have plenty support over there and please know you can contact ask the nurse here by email if you would like to discuss anything at lungcancerhelp@roycastle.org, our free phone nurse led helpline number is 0800 358 7200 Monday to Thursday 0900-1700 and Friday 0900-1600

Kindest regards
