had lung surgery 5 weeks ago

Hi Londo

Hope ok

You don't say what type of cancer you have.

I have Stage 4 lung cancer and it started with stabbing pains in left shoulder blade and lower ribs. Cancer diagnosed in August last year.

I originally had immunotherapy but it didn't work. I'm now on chemo 5 sessions in all.

Just had radiotherapy too, which really helps.

Let me no and I'll give you all the support, like many on this site.

Sending love

Pam

thank you for your reply same how first part of message didn't show. i had surgery to remove part of right lung 5 weeks ago xx

I'm sorry to hear that Londo I think if it was possible to do surgery treatment will be much more successful. I couldn't have surgery because the tumour is too near a heart valve.

I wish you all the very best and sending love

Hi Londo, I had my right lung removed in 2020, when you say stabbing pains is it there all the time or does it keep happening where it makes you jump? Did you have key hole surgery or open?

Hi Eglingham thank for replying i had key hole surgery and the pain is not there all the time it just keeps hitting me on movement and same times on touching that place as siting back in a chair or bending

Hi Londo, yes that sounds like nerve damage from surgery and it is normal. Mine went on for months but I had open surgery. Hope you feel better soon ☺

yes, it's normal - nerves are disturbed during surgery - moreso in open thoracotomy than keyhole but it can take a while to settle down. it's still early days if you only had it weeks ago. it takes time for the body to recover inside. This booklet has lots of info about expected milestones and potential side effects - take painkillers and also keep active as sitting/lying around doesn't speed recovery... good luck. roycastle.org/app/uploads/2...

Hi Londo

Sorry to hear you are having some stabbing pains, as others have said this can be quite normal post lung surgery. It can take up to 6 or 8 weeks for full recovery and 12 weeks to resume normal activities.

You could contact your lung cancer nurse specialist to discuss your concerns.

If the pain becomes worse with increasing shortness of breath then we would advise that you seek medical attention.

The stabbing pain should settle down and it is important to pace yourself with exercise or daily activities, you will find information on this from the booklet link that JanetteR57 placed in her post and here it is again below:

If there is anything else you would like to discuss you can either email ask the nurse at lungcancerhelp@roycastle.org or call our free phone nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200 Monday to Thursday 0900-1700 and Friday 0900-1600

Hope you feel better soon.
