My dad is having Chemotherapy Carboplatin and Paclitaxel and immunotherapy Pembrolizumab every 3 weeks for 4 cycles. He’s had 2 so far. He gets what he describes as electric shocks across his chest. Before treatment started he was getting a lot of pain in his back, like a boring feeling that was only relieved when he pressed his back against something, he had pain in his side and his chest. His cancer is in his right lung, adrenal gland and spine and ribs, hip and femur. My dads taking 2 x 10mg slow release morphine tablets twice a day (1 every 12 hours) and he’s not really getting any pain at all. He broke his femur just over 6 weeks ago and had to have a rod and pins in his femur from his hip to his knee and the morphine tablets cover most of the pain from that too.

Contact your GP for better pain relief so you aren’t suffering too much xxx

Hi,

You should speak to your GP about your pain. Are you taking the morphine regularly as prescribed? If so, it may be that you need a different type of medication for the stabbing pain in addition to the morphine.

Your doctor may want to know if the pain is continuous or does it come and go ,how severe is it(on a scale from1-10)does it affect your sleep? does anything make it worse or better? (for example moving about)and do you think your current medication for the pain is effective.

Hopefully you will get some relief.

Kind regards,

all the support team at the Roy Castle helpline.
