KRAS mutation in lung cancer

Hi there my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in December . It has spread to the lymph nodes and he also has two tiny spots on his brain.

He is currently having chemotherapy . Cisplatin and pemexetrex. He will have a scan this week to see if the treatment has worked and he has his final infusion on the 20th March.

Now I have made the fatal mistake of looking online at survival rates and treatment possibilities .

Overall his health is good he walks/jogs daily . He has lost no weight during treatment.

Is there anyone who has experience of the KRAS mutation..? I’m realistic I don’t expect a miracle but the prognosis online is total doom and gloom.

Dear Oscar222

Sorry to hear about your Husband and how difficult this must be for you all.

There is so much information online that it can be both confusing and alarming. Good sites to use for information apart from our own roycastle.org, are:

cancerresearchuk.org

macmillan.org.uk

nice.org.uk (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence)

Perhaps discuss this with the lung cancer specialist nurse and or Oncologist.

No-one can really give a time as each individual can respond differently to treatments and has a lot of associating factors, i.e is in good health at the start of treatment, reduced symptoms etc.

I have placed a link below on a clinical trial you may find of interest or something to think about on the KRAS mutation:

clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show...

You may find this article of interest in the research being conducted on the KRAS mutation:

sciencedaily.com/releases/2...

If you wish to discuss anything you can call us on our free nurse led helpline number on 0800 358 7200.

All the very best

I've been living with stage iv nsclc since Aug 2015. The online statistics are old. To add to what RC said, doctors can't predict life span. There is a kras group on Facebook. You may be able to connect with other KRASers for answers to questions about treatments and options. facebook.com/groups/KRASlung/
