The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS)

For some patients, travel to receive healthcare can present difficulties – the journey may be lengthy or complex, costly, or there may be poor access to public transport. In particular, patients on benefits or low incomes can find it difficult to meet the cost of travelling to hospital or other healthcare premises for treatments or diagnostic tests. HTCS is part of the NHS Low Income Scheme, and was set up to provide financial assistance to those patients who do not have a medical need for ambulance transport, but who require assistance with their travel costs. You may be able to claim a refund under the HTCS for the cost of travelling to hospital or other NHS premises for NHS funded treatment or for diagnostic tests arranged by a doctor. Phone the Low Income Scheme free on 0300 330 1343 for more information
