Hello group!
My sister’s liver enzymes were very high and they stopped her targeted therapy for now. We have an appointment with the oncologist on Thursday and one with palliative care on Friday. Is this normal to have a drop in your enzymes?
She’s 85 years old and I think her age is not helping. She’s also on an antidepressant which is helping with her attitude and appetite.

Checking in to see how the appointment went today. I seem to have not hit share on the response I wrote the other day so I’ll write what I remember. I’ve not been on a targeted therapy so I will write what I’ve learned from the Xalkori home page.
“Hepatic Impairment: XALKORI has not been studied in patients with hepatic impairment. As crizotinib is extensively metabolized in the liver, hepatic impairment is likely to increase plasma crizotinib concentrations. Use caution in patients with hepatic impairment.”

Thank you Denzie for the detailed information in your reply. I just replied to Lynn’s earlier message in detail. The doctor has placed her back on the meds and we’re hoping for some improvement.
What a crazy world cancer is. It is also frustrating dealing with insurance, pharmacies,
Aids, nurses from the insurance (Blue Cross) who recommended hospice. She’s on palliative care now.
Totally insane when she’s not in pain, she’s now eating, her depression lifted, she’s just nervous and doesn’t want to try to walk because she’s afraid of falling.
These meds work, she just needs to be positive and apparently I’m the only one with hope as that’s the last thing we should ever lose.

Hi, My name is Lynn, my husband Sam has been on a targated therapy drug for a little over a month now.Went to oncologist this week, severe fatigue, mouth sores and bathroom issues. The dr. Reduced his pills from three a day to two pills a day. Sam is 74 years old. If everythng goes o.k. We will see his Dr. In a month, these targated therapy drugs can effect the liver we were told. The oncologist. said she will watch the liver enzymes

My sister went to her oncologist yesterday and they placed her back on the cancer pills but only one per day. Apparently this might work. We don’t have the results yet o from blood work to see if the enzymes are under control. In the meantime she is on oxygen basically 24-7. My sister is 85 and is not a fighter unfortunately. Doesn’t want to do therapy and is on a wheel chair now. The younger you are I hear the better the outcome. In any event, she still needs all the mental fortitude to combat this insidious disease and right now she’s a nervous wreck. I’ve recommended medical marijuana but I’m not the primary caregiver so the only thing I can do is provide support and suggestions. Sometimes I even sound like a broken record.

Hi Betty, I did ask Sams oncologist at this past week's appointment that by reducing the dosage of the pills would it be as effective, she said yes and we could alternate the dosage after a bit .
I feel like these treatments may help to fight the disease, but then are also harmful in other ways. Like chemo, kills the bad cells but also some of the good???

Betty, thank you for keeping us updated...we wait to hear. Your sister is blessed to have such an understanding and strong advocate, it is a shame you don't have more of a direct voice in her decisions, but your love still supports her and surely must comfort her. Please remember to take care of yourself too. Will watch for more news from you, praying it will be hope-filled.
