Question about how arm is measured and swelling increase

Hi All,

I'm told my arm circumference has increased by 1cm on my last measurement for garments. Bit of a naive question, but does this mean 1cm all around the arm (So leg is wider by 1cm everywhere - front, back, sides, etc) or is that 1cm additional swelling across everywhere on the arm?

Did the therapist put the measurements into a device like a bulky hand held calculator? If s/he said an increase of 1cm, then this may mean along the length of the arm. Or, it may mean the forearm, or upper arm - you could ask them direct, to save speculation. Did s/he say the garment size would be altered?

I would imagine it means that the circumference has increased by 1cm. That's what it means when the lymphoedema nurse says my measurements have increased.

I'd ask your therapist to explain specifically, because it could mean in just 1 section of the arm or that each measurement has increased by 1cm. Intervention, if needed could be different. And it might be worth thinking back to see if you have done anything different lifestyle wise or in your hosiery wear and doing your self massage.
