Hello Bethanie17
This is common when you have anxiety , you are hyperventilating and it feels really unpleasant and then the more you focus on it the worse it feels and it is like a vicious circle
Try some breathing exercises for anxiety , if you go on You tube and put Breathing exercises for anxiety a wide choice of different one's will come up and I am sure you will find one that suites you
Best practising them when you are not having the issue till you get the hang of them and once you have you can then put them into practice when you are suffering and hopefully it will help
Take Care x
Agree with lulu-1. The breathing exercises seem trite at first, but they help significantly. With practice and after a number of days, the idea to stop and breathe correctly will come to you when you feel your symptoms start, and it will control your hyperventilation whereas the idea may never have popped into your head otherwise. It also helps to exhale all the way out as much as you can when your breathing is off kilter in order to empty your lungs, and then start breathing slower and deeper. This is because sometimes are lungs are overinflated due to the shallow breathing and it makes us feel like we need more air, and then we try to take in more air but we can't cause there's barely room left in the lungs to accommodate it- and that makes us feel short of breath and even more anxious and the cycle continues.
