Hi Newbeginnings20 I buy Biona organic coconut whipping cream and buy it in my local whole food shop.

Please see:

biona.co.uk/product/biona-o...

If you are looking for a convenient sub with what you have in, you can add a tad (technical term!) of whole milk to double cream. I add enough to make the same fat content as whipping cream.

Hope that helps.

Proper whipping cream is about 35% fat with no additives, so it should be fine to just use that. Just avoid the synthetic crap that's made from margarine and chemicals.

So I can buy whipping cream in Asda or any supermarket?

TheAwfulToad profile image
TheAwfulToadAmbassador in reply toNewbeginnings20

Sure. As long as it says: "Ingredients: Cream" and "30% butterfat" [or more] on the side, it's normal whipping cream.

Thank you 😊

Just avoid Emlea, a mysterious product that I recently stared at on the supermarket shelf, that I cannot imagine why it exists.

in reply toSubtle_badger

Oh no! I’ve been using elmlea double cream in my coffee..it’s low carbs..I checked the content...why would you avoid it ...maybe I’m using the wrong thing..it appeared to be the lowest carbs ..

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply to

Because it's made in a factory, not in a cow, it's full of ingredients that have no health benefits and quite likely are unhealthy

Elmlea

INGREDIENTS:

Buttermilk (MILK) (63%), Vegetable Oils in varying proportions (Palm, Rapeseed) (35%), Buttermilk Powder (MILK), LACTOSE, Emulsifiers (E322 (from SOYA), E473), Stabilisers (E415, E407), Colour (E160a)

Double Cream INGREDIENTS: Double Cream (Milk).

I just looked. Elmlea is 3.9g carb/100g. Tesco double cream is 1.6g.

The only advantage I have read is longer shelf live: but real food is supposed to rot.

in reply toSubtle_badger

Ah I need to ensure I have my reading glasses with me when I go out ..I managed to check the carbs and thought they were quite low...but actually in comparison as you say even they not as low...

Thanks for bringing that to my attention..no more elm Lea for me !

Cheers

I agree with you, it’s awful was offered some at a friends over Christmas. And I went into a supermarket like Asda and they had the full range of emlea and only one other which was way overpriced.

I noticed this sort of thing last time I was back in England. Despite the government making all the right noises about getting people eating better food, the stuff in the supermarkets is worse than ever.

Everything is processed (typically to remove the fat and replace it with sugar or chemicals), and they put the processed version front-and-centre so you're more likely to pick it up. The "low fat" label is in tiny, tiny letters. Sometimes it isn't there at all: my mum bought low-fat milk and low-fat coleslaw, completely unintentionally, because it wasn't declared clearly on the packaging. You had to look on the ingredients list to figure out what you've just bought.

If you want the unprocessed version, you might be able to find one single brand, tucked away in the corner gathering dust. The rest is rows and rows of low-fat, high-sugar.

It’s unbelievable how much processed food is on the shelves now. And the amount of wrapping it’s packed in, plus the assortment of reusable bags to take it home in. I have used the same bags for over ten years 😂😂

I think you need to explain why you are substituting? Eg vegan, lactose intolerance, avoiding saturated fats etc.

Because one of the joys of LCHF is you don't have to sub out cream on the diet. Did I tell you about the hazelnut truffles I made that turned out to be LCHF?

I just thought it was American if the truth be known so wasn’t sure!

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toNewbeginnings20

Ah, that's why I couldn't understand what you were asking.

No, it's readily available in any supermarket

waitrose.com/ecom/products/...

(but as pointed out above, you could "make" it by thinning out double cream with milk, if you can do the maths 😉)

So looking at double cream now in Aldi and all it says is contains milk??

in reply toNewbeginnings20

Double cream is what you want. It’s the richer, fattier part of milk removed to make low fat milk. Whipping cream is a slightly less creamy version than double cream. The scale from light to rich goes milk, single cream, whipping cream, double cream, extra thick double cream, clotted cream. All straight from the cow, nothing added. Yummy yum yum.

I’m just cooking a pork loin with cheese gratin - I’m going to try and do the 2 week free thing! So much cheese wow

Shredded cheese and other cheese and soft cheese lol

Hope it’s nice lol

I ate half a Camembert for lunch, biting off the round. My colleagues at work laughed like a drain. I’ll be having the last laugh though come Easter....

Btw I’m doing fasting and Keto - so on this 2 wk thing it says I should be having breakfast and dinner with no need for snacks. However I don’t eat until 12 - so could I eat say olives - boiled egg 🥚- little cheese 🧀 and carrot 🥕 sticks etc then have my dinner when I get home ?

Excellent. Giving you food not nutrient advice, creme fraiche is delicious. Another option for your LCHF lifestyle.

BridgeGirl in reply toNewbeginnings20

Are you not having breakfast because you aren't hungry or because you've decided on intermittent fasting? I wouldn't force the fasting but if it's because you're not hungry, fine. Be guided by the 2 week plan you have (is it Diet Doctor?). It's well planned.

Completely agree, just misunderstood and thought she wanted to whisk it!

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toStoozie

Well, you can whisk double cream!

Stoozie profile image
Stoozie in reply toSubtle_badger

Indeed. I just find it goes a bit 'claggy' whereas whipping cream is a bit more floaty and light :)

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toStoozie

Yes, I nearly said you have to be careful with double cream; a few seconds extra whipping and you nearly end up with butter.

Which I love, but not on pavlova.

Newbeginnings20 profile image
Newbeginnings20 in reply toSubtle_badger

Oh so when it asked for whipping cream lol

Oops forgot to whisk the double cream! I just poured it over the cauliflower gratin!

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toNewbeginnings20

No, you are good. Whipping cream is a type of cream that can be whipped. If the recipe wanted you to whisk it, it would call it whipped cream.

Hmmm, cauliflower gratin. Of to check with chef Google.

Newbeginnings20 profile image
Newbeginnings20 in reply toSubtle_badger

No it’s asking for heavy whipping cream!

How quick does the weight come off I’m getting anxious about all this full fat stuff I’m eating ha

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toNewbeginnings20

I haven't gone full high fat yet. I am a chicken.

Sorry, there are others who will know better than i do.

Edit: though you have inspired me, I may make cauliflower gratin tonight.

Newbeginnings20 in reply toSubtle_badger

Ahh ok 👌 not sure if I’m high high yet but double cream and cheeses I would think are?

BridgeGirl profile image
BridgeGirl in reply toNewbeginnings20

Just commit yourself to the plan you have for two weeks and take it from there. I'm sure it took you a loooooot longer than a few weeks to gain the extra weight you have. It isn't a diet, it's a new way of eating that can help re-set your appetite, and weight loss will be a happy by-product.

If you're a member of the Weight Loss forum, you'd be very welcome to join the Daily Diary and post your meal plans there. You'll find plenty of members following a low carb plan and there's certainly one doing a keto induction

Ahh yes thank you - that’s what I did all be it quite difficult with only 25ml lol

Just scrapes the bottom of the bowl ha

Make a double batch? Anyway, if you're following LCHF, there's no need to limit the cream 😜

I’m just following the exact recipe on the 2 week Keto thing 😃

I joined this forum about 5 weeks ago and started following a LCHF diet shortly before Christmas. I stuck to it pretty well over Christmas and the New Year although I did have a little bit of Christmas naughtiness but since I started, I have lost about 3 lbs. I am thrilled with this as normally I would have put on 5 - 7 lbs over Christmas. So I am now cracking on with my LCHF diet. I'm not sure how it's different to ketogenic- will check it out
