Crisps substitute

Hi Folks, I'm following the SN programme and truly enjoying the variety of natural foods that I now eat. However, my nemesis is crisps. Does anyone have a realistic substitute for the taste and texture? I truly struggle to resist them.......

Hi ANewMe2022, I went through a similar dilemma. After asking myself why I liked the crunchy, salty, thinly sliced potatoes I decided it was just that, the crunch and the salt. Now,I roast and slightly salt almonds. They're quite high in calories but low carb and a few go a long way 😋

BTW, did you mean to post here on the LCHF forum or on Weight Loss Support:)

Hi there, could I ask what the SN diet is please. As for the crisps, you could try salted popcorn 🍿 and it's good for you.

Hi, thank you, i literally picked some up in lidl this morning! SN is the Second Nature programme on the NHS Weight Management Service. No processed or low fat foods, just natural, and low carb. There are some really delicious recipes that I've followed

Many people believe that popcorn is healthy, but it's almost pure carbohydrate, so it doesn't belong on a low carb diet. Especially as a snack! Because one of the reasons low carb works is it keeps your insulin low. But eating a couple of handfuls of grain with nothing to buffer it on an empty stomach would almost certainly cause a blood sugar rise, that would lead to an insulin release stopping fat burning, and if you are unlucky, might even cause rebound low sugar afterwards.

Snack on cheese, or better still nothing

Hi, I find a good low carb subsitute is homemade cheese crisps. So easy to make. Just grate cheese onto a non-stick oven tray and grill at high temperature for a few minutes. Once it's cooled for a few minutes you can break it up into crispy sections. -- also seeded keto crackers, or seaweed crisps. For me also, it's about having something salty and crispy... not about the actual potato bit. Hope you've found some good options!

Something my DH loves (I don't especially, but...) are pork rinds. They are very salty and crispy and nowadays come in the same crazy (OK, surely artificial, but they're good to nip a craving inn the bud) flavors like BBQ or salt and vinegar.

You find them in the potato chip aisle. I assume you must have them over there?

Not what you're looking for?
