splenectomy

Hi I've been taking Eltrombopag tabs for nearly 2yrs and before that I was having Immunoglobulin infusions every 3 weeks and now my Dr wants to remove my spleen as my platelet count is around 21-23 and hasn't gone above 30 since december and my red cell count is low as well, Have many people had their spleen removed and has it helped as I'm a bit nervous about having this done especially as the spleen plays an important role with red blood cells and the immune system, I also suffer with M.E & Fibromyalgia as well

I had my spleen removed and it made no difference. I now pick up all sorts of colds and infections that last longer and are worse than for other people. Stay away from having a splenectomy at all costs if you can. NickyD

There is a way to predict if splectonomy will put you in remission. I wouldn't try it without assuring the shot. Good luck.

Btw 21 to 23 isnt that bad if you have no bleedings. But it depends on age, professional risks etc....

I had a 28 year remission after my splenectomy. I have had very few coughs or colds over the years so I have been fortunate. There are other treatment options available now though. Whatever you decide, platelets up.

Hi. I have been on 75 dose of eltrompobag for 5 years. my lowest platelet count was 5. I didn't respond to other treatments or platelet transfusions...my count now varyss between 22 and 50/ 60. my doctor accepted now that this is how my blood behaves I have large granular lymphoma luekaima . i would seriously have along chat with your doctor as removal of spleen was a very old fashioned approach something not done these dats. i also know some one who had it removed and ut had no impact on her blood count. the spleen naturally gets rid of platelets each day..it cleans our bloid. if the spleen becomes enlarged then that would be o be reason for removal. hope thus helps
