Hi all fellow ITP'ers, quick query - does any one know the restrictions on analgesics for ITP sufferers? I seem to recall that Aspirin and Ibuprofen were no no's, bu can't find any info on that. All comments gratefully received.

Hi

Aspirin is a definite no no because it is also used to thin the blood. I’m not so sure about Ibuprofen but I think you can take it short term. Best to check with your haematologist on using that. I just take paracetamol and have been prescribed Codeine for stronger pain relief.

Morning Janran, thanks for that; I was pretty sure re Aspirin. I have a telephone conversation with my haemo later, so will run Paraceamol past him. Grateful for your input.

Hi Janran, I should have put Ibuprofen not Paracetamol above!

Aspirin, ibuprofen and many antibiotics can have a negative effect on platelet counts. It varies, but generally it applies. Paracetamol should be okay. Doxycycline-based antibiotics and Sulfamethoxazolum (kind of antibiotics), can both potentially slightly increase counts. Azithromycin antibiotics have been quite disastrous for me platelet wise, so I certainly don't recommend those!

Nothing Asprin family, that includes Ibuprofen.

Paracetamol then co-codamol. Co-codamol didn’t agree with me much, but the pain got so bad I got used to it (but, of course, it messes with your bowel movements...)

GP checked with haematology because we were both unsure. Ibuprofen did agree with me & worked really well and when I’m in pain I’m seriously tempted, so the family have to hide their ibuprofen so I don’t get tempted!

Thanks for your input Asimkumar - Haemo has confirmed Paracetamol only. Don't know Ultracet, I am in the UK and that is not a brand name/drug name listed here.
