high platelets

Anyone middle age find there blood platelets raised? and rest of blood test okay! im being refererd to a heamatoligist in september ,meanwhile taking Asprin

my first reading was 478 after a month it was 458, i dont know latest reading but Gp got me appoinment in sept for hematoligist, said may do bone marrow biopsy and medication, in meantime im taking asprin as a precaution! im just 62 and up till now platelets were fine.

Molly, we are the opposite here and have far too few platelets. Too many is just as worrying but not something we have experience of.

Molly, I can share my experience with you. I am an ITP patient who was eltrombopag, steroids and dapsone. My platelets were as low as 2000 and suddenly went up to over 10 lakhs. Even today is it is very high around 9 lakhs. I am on aspirin and continue to take 5 mg steroids and dapsone. I am also taking an a to coagulant. In my case my high platelets are drug induced, in your case you need to find out the reason for the high platelets.

My platelets are not always high but go up and down with the severity of my Behcets so my platelets have always acted as a disease indicator and very useful when they were below 700. They can be as low as 375 when my illness is good.

At their highest my platelets were nearly 1200. When they were over 1000 I got dangerously ill bleeding and clotting and I nearly died last year of a bleed following an infection.This could have been avoided if I had known to double my steroids when I have an infection.

Nobody seems to know why my platelets behave the way they do or the connection to bleeding and clotting.

I have been to a haematologist but it was a waste of time - she said it was just reactive thrombocytosis. I also have had raised liver function tests so I think perhaps it is something to do with that but still under investigation.

If you have any luck finding anything out please let me know and I will do the same.
