Hi my son is 6 years old. He was detected itp since 4 years. When his counts go down i could see bruising and occasional nose bleeds .

We do treat him for this.but we don't stop him from doing anything. Should itp be treated. The term of itp was new to me. Although he seems to be fine I am terribly mentally disturbed once i see the skin bleeds on him.how do other parents handle this. Kindly advise

If he has had it this long he is considered chronic. Its very much watch and wait with children treat symptoms not numbers. Perhaps no parachute jumping but a good active life is important

My daughter is 7 and has ITP for nearly 6 years. Her count has never been above the 20s. Her ladt count was 5. She is always covered in bruises and petechiae, she bleeds a lot from cuts and sometimes gets nose and gum bleeds. ITP also causes her to suffer badly from fatigue. She has never had treatment apart from one platelet transfussion which was pointless and she has tranexamic acid when needed to stop nose and gum bleeds. Everyone on facebook forums seems to think I'm a terrible mum not treating, but we haven't been given it as an option as the side effects tend to be really bad. Although we are quite laid back we are carefully about which sports she plays. She can't do trampolining unless it has a surround and she is on her own. Bouncy castles are also a no. Rugby and football she can't do. We said she can do roller skating in the garden with a helmet but not in a rink. Next year it looks like there will be lots of football in her PE lessons at school so she will have to sit out :-(

I usually find that those who criticise are adults with itp and are always shocked at the numbers. But I follow my teams lead not theirs. Much better to watch and wait with kids we only treat if there is a bleed. It should always be about the symptoms not the numbers child or adult. I have had itp for 17 years my son for over 2 now.
