Hello. I'm new here. My son, 11, was diagnosed with ITP last month. We have changed his diet and followed Hematologists suggestion to not do any tratment right now unless it's a must. I am already running out of ideas on what recipes and snacks that i can offer him since he's starting to get bored of the food that i offer him. Any recipes and snacks suggestions that any one can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's a good question. I don't have answers but will try to research it. Check out the PSDA (I think) food guidelines. Search 'food good for blood platelets'.

I've been thinking about giving him some beetroot juice but scared of allergy symptoms if ever he's allergic to it. Plus, how much do i give an 11 year old kid? Thank you for replying!

We used to mix beetroot with tomato juice and give once a day.All fresh.

Do you also give your kid a multivitamin?

No,we only gave him natural foods which included aloe vera juice, wheatgrass shots, mixed kale and spinach in most of his foods.

However we did give him homeopathic after testing for steroids.

Hi, what country are you in, what is his platelet count range, was he diagnosed after a serious viral/bacterial infection?????

I was diagnosed in early 1990’sand am now stable on weekly Nplate injections. I’m in Chicago, USA:)

Hi. We're in CA, USA. They don't know if it's caused by a virus because he did have a fever for a day a few days before he was diagnosed. But they think it's not from that. When he was first diagnosed in oct of this year he was on 13k. Went up to 104k in a week, then only to go down to 2k after a week. His last blood test was on 40k and due to get another this coming thursday.

Hi, I responded several hours with many questions but neglected to address the diet question. A well balanced diet is essential for physical and emotional well being. I see members have suggested gluten free Keto diets, I can only tell you of foods to limit or avoid such as foods high in Omega 3 ( salmon, tilapia and almonds as they interfere with platelet function and will drop your platelet counts. I generally limit salmon to once a month but last month I had tilapia every day for a week forgetting that each serving contained 850mg of Omega 3, dropping my platelets from 40 thousand to 12 thousand in one week.

This site has an excellent educational section, check it out and learn as much as you can about our disease and treatment regimes so you can advocate for your child:)

I thought almond is supposed to be good! Yikes! And i changed his milk to almond milk brcause they said to avoid cow's milk! I was actually going to do a paleo diet on him although not all the way.

Thank you for replying by the way.

Correction regarding Omega 3 content: walnuts have more than almonds and are considered a heart healthy food, I was correct about salmon and tilapia:(

I am doing Auto immune paleo diet from 6 months and in between have slipped through. Initially it didnt affect my platelets. Last month it was 170 becoz of Dexamethasone. (And I am on Promacta as well from an year+ with higher being 240 and lowest being 11k. ) Usually after a month, it was supposed to drop to 30-40's as per past experience. But this time it has stayed in 120s which is surprising. I am telling that because, am using Salmon almost every week and pure almond milk everyday from 6 months and it didnt influence my counts. Its just trail and error and varies person by person.!!

My homeopathic said to do gluten free diet. Just curious were you out of the country just b efore the diagnosis. I was in Costa Rica and caught a virus, bacteria or parasite. It took a long time to get rid of the infection.

And then I neded homeopathics for about 8 months to get my immune system rebalanced.

Good Luck!
