Everyone has different experiences when leaving Intensive Care. I was transferred to two different hospitals.

When I was transferred from Intensive Care at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in 2005 I was not only transferred to a different ward I was also transferred to different hospitals aswell. On each occasion the nurses and doctors were not prepared for someone as ill as I was at the time. What have been your experiences of this, have things improved substantially since then?

I remained in the same hospital throughout my illness(es). In ICU I recovered from bacterial meningitis but suffered convulsions - my brain had been under such pressure that my lasting illness was a stroke.

I left ICU after eleven days, was transferred to the respiratory ward, because of my poor lung function and finally made it to the acute stroke unit where I remained for almost three months.

I was not allowed to go home then but, in hindsight, had a remarkable stay at Rayner's Hedge Neuro Rehab Unit in Aylesbury. 'Remarkable'? Yes, I was taught how to safely live at home again on my own.

I was transferred from George Eliot ICU to Coventry, Walsgrave in an induced coma for treatment but it was decided I would not survive the treatment and spent 12 days in ICU with an Oscillator plugged in to me. I was then transferred back to George Eliot ICU were I woke up. But I was not sure what country I was in?

I was transferred to a ward after 88 days in ICU, a move one of my consultants was not happy about, as after 2 days on the ward I had another infection and was moved around the ward 3 times, the sister on the ward was the most uncaring nurse I've ever met, she had no idea where I had come from and what I had been through, it was the worst 12 days I can remember.
