induced coma recovery

my sister is recovering from an induced coma. I was researching and found that they said familiar atmosphere and people would help with the healing process.

Well, her son who has power of attorney moved her to his house two hours away from where she lives. She’s been staying with him and his wife and three kids on a farm and his wife teaches His kids are very active in FFA and soccer. So they are extremely exhausted And do not want any people places or things reminding her of her past it creates breakthrough moments and she cries and shuts down. She lived in a 55+ rv resort He moved her RV to his house. She’s in a better place but really wants to go back to her old life with her friends and activities and routine She’s done for years, so I’m pretty sure she would fall back into that but the routine included drinking every day. She hasn’t had any alcohol since the 23rd of December 2024 and her son is afraid she will go back to drinking. At what point does the power of attorney end and she is able to make her own decisions. This is all so heartbreaking, her son wants what’s best for her but she wants to go home. She can walk drive a golf cart not sure about a car read make coffee and seems very aware but sometimes she gets confused about things like how many cars she has, and couldn’t remember her phone number.

A number of questions here!

I’m not a lawyer but my wife and 2 of my daughters have power of attorney over me. It lasts until it is revoked BUT it can only be used when the person concerned can’t make any decisions for themselves. It sounds as if your sister has mental capacity however if her son wanted to contend this it could become difficult for family relations and may finish up in the court of protection.

When I fist came home and for several months my wife was over protective (she knows how I felt) and I understand why. I had to prove to her that I was capeable. Some things were very difficult to do and I had to learn by my mistakes. The first time I took my car out I had to work out how to get in reverse - my car is automatic. I always had the option to abandon what I was doing. Getting independence is, for me, really important.

We are caravaners so I understand the issue around having a drink. But I would say the greater concern is knowing who real friends are. Relationships change. People don’t understand that we don’t suddenly recover we change!

Thank you for the info and I’m happy you’re doing so well. I’m putting her in Gods hands now. She’s a stubborn little thing so we’ll have to see how things unfold.

This was taken one month ago.
