Why is my brother as he is

Had problems with breathing. Put on oxygen. Then CPAP mask.

Was talking. Able to walk move everything as normal.

Overnight placed on induced coma.

Eventually brought out of it after a considerable time.

Unable to talk or move.

Can now speak albeit slurred and non understandable at times.

Can move his head .

Unable to move from the neck down.

Slight lift of fingers.

Can force shoulders to move

He can feel you touching his body. He feels pain And his body temperature is squew.

He was moved to a care home which was supposed to be neuro rehab home

He was not given intense physio. It was a money thing for it to be asked for by the home

A lot of the time he was left on his own. Despite fear and anxiety and no call bell or any means to contact a nurse for help or anything

He is now in a different home which he has had to pay 10.000 plus per month from the sale of his and his daughters home.

He still cannot move from the neck down.

Have you or anyone got any idea as to why he has ended up like this. It has been 3years now

He now has physio maybe twice a week.

He does not have anyone to interact with.

Breakfast lunch dinner he is fed. No meaningful conversation or anyone spending time with him.

Again visits restricted. Only one dedicated visitor. The same one.

Please can anyone help

Why is my brother like this ?

What has happened to him!?

I asked to speak to the Icu team. No joy there.

Any help ideas would be appreciated

My brother cannot do anything himself.

Thank you for reading.

I would guess he hasn’t had enough physio or strength building exercises. He may have neuropathy which will exacerbate any muscular- skeletal issue. We do online strength building classes which are free where ever you are.

Your brother would be asked to attend an induction class ( on line) so that his capability could be assessed

I have no useful advise but wanted to wish you and your brother well. I hope things improve for him in the near future.

I think I could well have ended up like your brother. I was admitted for an elective operation that had it not been carried out could have led to death in seconds. Hiwever as a result of that op I developed a blood clot in my heart.

I had no idea of what had happened until weeks later I came round and was told that I had died on the table been resuscitated and been in ICU for weeks.

I had no visitors in all of the time I was there. Height of Covid! Apart from when my son was flown in from Canada to U.K. to say goodbye . I don’t remember any of it. But it was explained to me that I was lucky to be alive at all and that it would have been very likely that when I recovered I would have been in your brothers state.

However you ask about physio. At no stage was it explained to me that I was having physio. When I came round I simply couldn’t moveIt was explained to me why and what I needed to do about it, but most of it was left to me. I was told what to do and I did it. I will honestly say it was one of the toughest experiences in my life and had I suffered any degree of mental impairment I don’t think I would understood the trade off of spending ten minutes of every hour on the recommended exercises.I certainly saw people there in a similar predicament who simply wouldn’t do as they were told because it was uncomfortable. And they were still there when I was discharged. Way too soon but Covid was threatening the whole hospital.

So I think it I possible to generalise on physio experience, how much is available, how much is needed and even the ability of the patient to absorb what they are told.

I do hope your brother can find some improvement.
