I have quite a basket of post-ICU/ECMO/covid/coma health issues, but the majority of them have been known to me since I left hospital, eg denuded lungs, heart, neurology issues, muscle waste, fatigue etc etc.
However, a small bombshell has landed in my lap just recently. I have now also been diagnosed with osteoporosis, which has come as a real shock.
The consensus of the various specialists is that it has been precipitated by the massive volume of steroids given to keep me alive as my lungs failed, as well as the effects of being completely immobile for 3 months. I have also been on high dosages of steroid inhaler since leaving hospital for lung inflammation.
They are currently deciding which chemical infusion I should have to try and stop the bone thinning. I was wondering if any other people on here have suffered from osteoporosis after a prolonged ICU stay?
(ps there is not enough research presently to know if covid has any effect too regarding osteoporosis).
