Sepsis shock induced coma
Hello! I went through the same thing, Feb 2020. I experienced the muscle weakness and pins and needles. I was told that when your body goes into shock your blood rushes to save the organs, as your extremities are not important for your survival. So there is a blood flow issue. What helped me is massaging my legs and feet, if you can find a magnesium cream it helps. Ginger tea helps with circulation. Yoga and walking also. Our bodies adapt and will get stronger. Hope this helps!
probably peripheral neuropathy, my circulation also took time to get back to normal. I wonder also about the more subtle effects of muscle waste - we have three groupings of muscle - skeletal, cardiac & smooth
Musculoskeletal tissue definitively wasted away leaving me weak as a kitten
Cardiac muscle wasted - my resting heart leaving ICU was 140, it’s now about 50.
My eyesight got worse, circulation, digestive function etc etc - all controlled by smooth muscles which I’m assuming wasted along with everything else. This is my theory and is unsubstantiated 💙
I’m not a medical person but this sounds very much like neuropathy. They say that the nerve ends die off and take quite sometime to recover. In my case my legs feel numb, my balance is technically cally crap and rather than pins and needles it feels as if I am being stabbed by needles. I have seen some improvement. Depending on we’re you live you might be able to get treatment.
Hi Lily ,
What you have to rule out is whether these symptoms are connected to your sepsis or just sheer coincidence and it's something else .
In my case I had had an operation on my spine after experiencing pins and needles and numbness in my legs then a year later I suffered multiple organ failure [ including my heart ] while in an induced coma having contracted sepsis .
Make an appointment with your GP and let them decide whether your symptoms deserve further investigation .
Good Luck .
Hi Lily ,
Just to follow up on what I said -
It's been 2 years since your septic shock and you did say you were recovering well -
These symptoms you're describing sound like a poor circulation problem which may or may not be connected to the sepsis -
For instance , are you diabetic , how old are you , how much exercise do you take , are you overweight etc - these can all affect your circulatory system .
I'd get myself checked out - best to know for certain .
In my case the pins and needles were caused by a disc problem [ I had an operation on 3 of my lower discs ] but you've added cold feet - classic symptoms of circulation problems - get yourself checked out , Lily .
I have suffered from this and much more since having Sepsis in May 2018 .. all part of the Post Sepsis Syndrome world that i now live in ... Every test under the sun, physio, scans .. all showing as good as nothing abnormal... Post Sepsis symptoms are in many many ways a mystery to the medical fraternity... im am very fortunate and have a superb GP who has also learned about the condition and gives me fantastic support.
hi I had the same but my toes were blue/black In parts! Have you had a blood test, if not see if you can get one as you may be lacking in B12, everything takes time, remember having this for a couple of years after….your body’s been through a lot and it all takes time! X
I too had sepsis 18 months ago, one month in icu on a ventilator. Am still having osteopath treatment for a trapped nerve and physio to build up from muscle wastage. Walking and work with weights is helping, that is not to say there is a magic wand, keep trying to find an answer and find what works for you.
