they removed my brothers leg and he is still septic..
Sorry to read about your brother. I had sepsis in 2020 and was in ICU for 4 weeks. I was pumped full of antibiotics and morphine and was out of it for sometime before finally coming round. It was a close call but I am the hope that patients do survive. I then contracted covid on a general ward and was back in ICU for 10 weeks, but thats another story, and somehow survived that as well. So dont give up. i can remember opening my eyes and the nurse saying "you back with us then.."
asilnosbig,
You sound really stressed out,and no wonder, this is bound to be a very difficult time for you. I can't send a hug, this is the best I can do:
🧸🧸🧸
Do please look after yourself, it will not help your brother if you are exhausted, I hope I don't sound like a grandma but make sure you're eating properly and getting sleep.
While you're waiting for him to wake up, here's some things you could do that may help you and him when he does:
Read what you can of the old posts on this site, about what other patients have experienced, particularly about how common it is to have strange vivid dreams while sedated and to wake up scared and confused, about how long it can take to get your strength back, and how difficult it is to find people to talk to who know what it's like. It will help both of you if you understand something of what he has gone through. A few of those posts are by me, but there are lots and lots to chose from.
Keep a diary of what happens, that you can share with him when he's awake. It could be a big help to him to sort out what really happened and what was just a dream. It may help you get through this difficult time too.
Your poor brother not only has to deal with all the usual after effects of a stay in ICU, but he will wake up and find he's missing a leg. I can only imagine how much of a shock that will be for him. It will make all kinds of problems for him, emotional and practical. You say that you need your big brother, but I'm guessing that he will need you for a long time - I hope you can find the inner strength to be the person that he can lean on. I hope that you will also find people who can support you and help you to help him.
I wish you both all the best.
Do keep posting and let us know how it turns out.
Kit10 is sooooo right..Sometimes it takes a longtime to find the right antibiotics only for the infection to change and the search starts all over again.
My family took a photo of me in a comma with my mouth open. It looks frightening but I’m here.
One of the problems with long stays is the medical staff tend to be pessimistic, not raise hopes too much, when we want them to be optimistic
Whilst your brother is still alive and the life support is actually working and keeping him stable - he has a chance and there is hope.
The majority of people survive ICU but, of course, there are folk who do not survive. Keep speaking to him and holding his hand, reassure him and encourage him - somewhere he may just be able to hear you - miracles do happen, many of us here have had terrible prognoses and yet here we are.
