Does anyone know of any useful games, strategies or techniques that can help stimulate a patients mind following a brain injury?

Hi all, does anyone know of any useful games, strategies or techniques that can help stimulate a patients mind following severe brain damage.

My brother suffered up to 9 minutes of oxygen deprivation and it is a miracle how well he is doing today.

When we chat I am amazed how well he is doing but he knows something is wrong as one minute he is completely with me, lucid in his thinking and speech and the next minute he is off in past memories which were years ago and do not make any sense to him.

The hard part is he knows he is going off on a tangent which doesn't have an ending so its frustrating for him.

He ha severe brain damage so it is understandable that he is searching his mind and cannot find all the answers but I just wondered if anyone knew of any games or tools or techniques that can help my brother find the present time more often and assimilate his mind and thoughts more.

Time will tell how well he recovers I know but seeing as Covid prevents visitors I feel he needs more stimulation or at least he is capable of using his brain more than he currently is.

Can anyone suggest anything or any ideas from experience?

Thank you

Adam

P.S. Anything to prevent his boredom in hospital would be welcome.

Maybe look at headway.org.uk/

They may have some advice.

Also icustepschester.org/informa... - has a pdf on brain injury and what to expect.

Good luck & I hope your brother improves over time.

Hello, I don't know what, or if, his hobbies are, but something along those lines, given our hobbies are part of our identity? After my long coma, someone sent me a really thick football magazine FourFourTwo's Top 100 Premier League Players Ever.

It was great because I could dip into it when I wanted, read as much or as little as I wanted ie I had a bit of control over what I was doing. Also, it jogged my memory and reminded me of a load of players I had forgotten over the years.

They also gave me coloured pens and paper to draw, which was great.

My last 2 recovery wards also had ipads but I found them too bright screened, and mentally draining.

Good luck with it all.

Depends what he enjoyed before I think. I played a lot of chess with my iPad. I am not sure how good it was for me but it was something familiar that was not that different to what I may have been doing anyway.

There used to be specially put together programmes of certain types of classical music and I think this may have been part of something called Brain Gym which may be worth having a look at👍
