My husband was on his way to recovery after Covid pneumonia. 5 days ago he got an infection, along with low blood pressure and now is unresponsive. He finally was able to complete dyalisis last night, but still asleep? Anyone been through this?

Althugh not a covid patient I was in ICU for some time nearly 2 months of which I was sedated and ventilated. I was recovering from a heart op had pneumonia and sepsis and other infections. It can take time firstly to be weened off the medication and secondly to come round. Some times in the weening off process they have to re-sedate.

At this time it is really important that you take care of your self

He is not on any sedation medication? Sepsis infection is causing this.

It took me 11 days to wake after sepsis & sedation & dialysis was ceased

It's concerning because it initially took him 31 days to wake up two months ago. Now a sepsis infection, and he is not sedated? He just sleeps!

I can only imagine the level of exhaustion he must be experiencing- his poor body is trying to recuperate

Sepsis really takes it out of you I was 28 and fairly fit when I had it and I couldn't lift a pillow and pretty much constantly slept for a while after it. You might find he just doesn't have have energy to get up yet

My dad last year was on ventilator for covid. After 2 weeks they had started to wean him down and he was doing awesome but literally one morning the hospital called and said “we dont know what happened but his blood pressure dropped to 60/40 and he is completely unresponsive. To make a long story short - he went into septic shock which is like end stage sepsis. They told me to sign a DNR. Well - hes home since August and doing amazing !!! He stayed unresponsive for at least 3 weeks but it was because of all the infection - his body was too weak and too tired to wake up. Once they did a brain MRI and saw no signs of brain injury or stroke, they said he just needed time to recover and get stronger and little by little each day Id FaceTime him and I would see gradual improvement, First his eyes would open but literally 2 slits and then he would nod when i asked a question and then he would start talking little by little. Have faith - always talk to him! My dad said he remembers me speaking to him even though he was too weak to respond but he says “i heard you saying daddy keep fighting- you are getting better each day so dont give up now!” O am praying for you guys:)

Thank you so much. You encouraged my family and I so much. My husband's infection numbers are on the decline and he is beginning to wake up.

How is he doing? Did his infection clear up? Is he responding? How are YOU doing?

Infection cleared and they are using dyalisis to dry his lungs and begin weaning from vent. I pray The Lord grants this miracle for him!
