My husband (27) is in ICU following an out of the blue ?asthma attack. Not responding to treatment.

We have a 5 year old daughter. I'm completely lost, unable to see or speak to him, he is too unwell to use his mobile.

I feel he wont make it. What do I do?

So sorry to hear this, you must be in shock. I would call and ask to speak to his consultant and ask them to explain everything to you, I would write it down. I can only compare this to when my Dad was in ICU with COVID last year, felt I helpless. At the moment you need as much information as they have and I appreciate they may not know everything themselves just now. Do you have anyone who can be with you? I know if you are in the UK this might be a challenge, but if anyone can come and support that would help as you go through this critical time. X

My husband was suddenly rushed into hospital back in August so I completely understand how you are feeling right now.

It would be worth asking the staff if they can facilitate a video call with your husband so that you can see/talk to him. I was lucky enough to be able to do this every day. I'm happy to tell you other things I did to try to get through the day if you want me to.

ICU steps Chester have an amazingly supportive online relatives group which you would be more than welcome to attend. They helped me to get through a really tough time when my husband was in hospital. They have also started a Facebook group which you might find helpful as it is a safe place to ask questions - look for 'intensive care support' and you should find it.

ICU Steps also have a downloadable book for children on their website which could be good for your daughter. I used it with my 3 year old and it helped me to talk to him (very simply) about where Daddy was.

Hi my husband ended up in ITU in September following a life threatening asthma attack, his heart stopped. He was placed in an induced coma and put on a ventilator.

This happened while he was working away 300 miles away from our home.

I found it extremely difficult to cope with, we were not allowed to see him, we did have fantastic staff in the ITU who we spoke to everyday.

I also spoke to a consultant every 2-3 days.

Phone the ITU and speak to and ask to speak to a consultant?

My husband was eventually repatriated nearer to home and our local hospital allowed a 1 hour visit per day in the ITU.

Keep strong, ask lots of questions from the staff at the hospital.

My husband has made a full recovery after 6 weeks in hospital and is now back at work.

Hope your husband improves xx
