Mini stroke

Hi everyone, if you’ve been following my dads story. You know that he’s off the ventilator and that he had his trach removed. His voice is slowly coming back. He moves his left side, his foot and arms and hand. He right side is very, very weak. Because of this, they decided to do a ct scan where they found a series of mini strokes. They said they are treating it with aspirin now. Now sure how though. I feel like this is such a setback once again. I don’t know what this means for him in regards of long term recovery. I’m greatful he’s overcome the worst, but I feel heartbroken learning about this situation.

With the appropriate physio people can fully recover.

My uncle who was in his eighties suffered a colossal stroke - a year later - you would not have known. Two of our group members had Covid last march & suffered several mini strokes - today you wouldn’t ( & they can’t tell) know.

Hi Ren2985, My story backs up what Sepsur says. I remember having news that my husband had had a stroke during long heart surgery. It took over 2 weeks before his sedation could be reduced and when it was he would only respond to sound by turning his head. That was when they did a CT scan that showed the stroke. It came as such a shock on top of what was a horrendous time already and it was hard not to imagine the worst. However, a year on if you met him in the street you wouldn't suspect what he's been through.

Thank you for your message. May I ask what his rehab was like?

When he eventually woke up he was transferred to a stroke assessment ward. That was a difficult time as they didn't really have the time and skills to help him properly. However, once he was transferred to a specialist rehab unit things were much better and he went from strength to strength. When multiple factors are at play it's not always clear what the impact of the stroke is and don't underestimate the recovery needed just from time spent in ICU.

If it’s mini stroke, it’s temporary. My dad had a mini stroke followed by a full stroke in September, 3 months before he got COVID. He was paralysed down one side, it affected his eyesight and his comprehension, his recovery from that was inspiring. His mobility afterwards was reduced, but he was out walking on his own and completely self sufficient within that time. I hope this helps you. Wishing you both well.
