My dad has been in ICU 2 weeks now after testing positive for Covid pneumonia. He has some underlying health conditions and has been up and down during his time there. They have started the weaning process this week and they said his body is panicking when they do so. He has failed to cope with the reduction in sedation and they tried an even smaller amount this morning and said he is still struggling. We have received a phone call tonight to say they are very concerned and we will need to make decisions in the next 48hours. Has anyone been through this same situation and anyone had to have many attempts at sedation being reduced if so how many times before it worked?

Many attempts - days and days - so try not to panic. Each of us in different.
Hi I am so sorry you and your family are going through this!
My dad was in the same position although not covid.
Became distressed everytime they tried to take down the sedation or he wouldn’t follow any commands.
They did a tracheostomy on Monday for him and although his now not sedated which is good his not responding yet.
Has your dad had a tracheostomy? X
My husband went through that. They finally gave him a combo of lower high sedation meds and anxiety medication and it worked.
