Your dad will probably get breathless when he does anything. Get him to slow down and take time to get his breath back before he does anything else. It’s going to take time for him to get his strength back and everything for him at the moment will feel like climbing Everest!!

Hi, I was discharged 10th May and my breathing is not the same capacity as pre covid. I do lots more exercise now and part of the process is breathing exercises. Its so frustrating as I played rugby and boxing pre covid but my lifestyle has changed for the short term. Tell your dad to keep batting on and the breathing will come to some form of normality I hope. Good luck to you and you dad.

Hi Suzywong

Well isn't that strange that's my nickname for my wife.

I'm not a corvid patient but was sedated/ventilated for nearly 2 months. My strength was drained whilst in hospital and doing anyhing was exhausting. Probably the hardest was taking a shower as I would be breathless and need a rest afterwards.I came out of hospital mid March and had no rehab until the beginning of June when I joned ICUSTEPSCHESTER. On zoom we work t our own pace band I do do 2 days of chair exercises and 2 days of yoga. Not only does this develop my physical strength but also improves my breathing. In particular the yoga helps my vocal chord recovery as I had a trachy.

Recovery is different foreveryone but it takes time. It is also important that you look after yourself.

P.S. I don't live in the geographical area of Chster and I'm 72

Have a look at the intensive care guide for patients & relatives.

Although is a general guide - it offers a view of what to expect after or during critical illness

Whilst Covid has a few more bells and whistles on it that many other things - people still seem to follow the same pathway - breathlessness ( muscles waste of diaphragm & respiratory deconditioning) muscle waste associated with all critical illness & ventilation, fatigue, brain fog and neuropathy & myopathy, delirium etc etc. I’d suggest that ‘long Covid’, Post Sepsis syndrome or PICS - post intensive care syndrome - all look symptomatically very similar.
