COVID, Internal Bleeding/ multi organ failure and coma

Hi all, I am here out of desperation and looking for hope like everyone else.

Mom was admitted to the ICU due to severe Covid infection and sever pneumonia. Her oxygen level was 90%. They put her on a ventilator with sedation. Her kidneys and liver weren’t functioning. Within a few days she was recovering (still had kidney and liver issues) and we were told they are reducing the sedation in prep to wean her off the ventilator. She was regaining consciousness. That’s about a week and 3 days from when she was admitted in the ICU.

During that same night they found out she had massive internal bleeding behind her abdomen. It was suspected due to the blood thinners they had her on and they stopped the blood thinners immediately. Required blood transfusion multiple times. After 3 days they were able to do a CT scan and confirmed the bleeding stopped on its own(formed a clot at the bleeding spot and the pressure from the clot stopped it, we were told). However they told us she has multi organ failure (heart, Kidney, liver, lungs). They also turned off the sedation but she has not woke up yet. her coma score is 3. Today marks 2 weeks in coma - not showing any improvements with all the supportive medicine she is given. No consciousness.

They did CT scan and MRI to the brain and it came back normal. Her blood pressure is extremely low she’s on BP drugs with maximum dosage but It’s not staying up.

She is having dialysis every couple of days. Liver is not working although some enzymes were showing slight improvement. Her skin is yellowish.

She is still on the ventilator without sedation. Due to the coma, she isn’t bothered by it.

Her organs are still very critical, her BP is not responding to medicine. We are afraid her heart might quit at some point. It’s only been 2 weeks and the docs think her recovery rate is slim, less than 20%.

Anyone has some information about similar cases specially with regards the multi organ failure and coma to share? Thank you

Welcome to this forum @sas2020

I’m sorry that you as a family are going through this awful ordeal.

I caught avian flu, within 2 days I had double pneumonia & strep A infection, within another day I had sepsis, the following day my kidneys failed. The following day I was admitted to a&e having gone into septic shock ( I remember none of this). They struggled for an hour to stabilise me, put me in an induced coma and moved me to ICU, my heart, respiratory system failed. 2 wks I fought septic shock, flu & pneumonia. Just as I turned a corner I got Severe ARDS. 57 days later I woke up. I had a type of leukaemia with out knowing. I remained in ICU for another 33 days.

I left hospital 4 yrs ago and although my story is more complex - I lead a pretty normal life. My chances of survival were below 1%.

Hi Sas2020

Sounds like you are really going through a worrying time with your mum.

My husband was admitted to ICU with covid. He was on a ventilator for weeks, during which time he had multi organ failure, had to have blood pressure support and kidney dialysis. It took weeks for him to wake up after They turned off sedation but very slowly he did. It was a very slow process and an agonising wait for the family. He was in ICU for 2 months. Eventually his kidneys started working again. He is now doing well in physio and rehab, although at the moment he has a liver infection and is still yellow.

So there is hope! My husband survived Covid and multi organ failure.

It is very tough for your mum right now but you'll find lots of experiences on this forum of people who have come through.

Thank you for your responses and support.

My mom had a cardiac arrest and she did not make it. My heart is broken.

Hello

Sorry to hear what your mum is going through. My husband has been in ICU since 10 April. 84 days today. He was on ventilator for 4 weeks, It took 3 weeks for him to fully wake up and the progress is slow but he is making progress. His oxygen was 100-90% but with time when his lung was healing, his oxygen went 30% He had lots of complications heart kidneys and lung failure. His BP was up and down all the time. They did a thacheotomy and it was better for him. We could see slow progress . He was on dialysis. He had 2 strokes. 1 cardiac arrest. Keep strong and have hope. Your mum will pull through with time x
