ICU nurses are real life living angles 💕

For all those family’s with relatives in icu just know they are well looked after . Today after nearly 8 weeks myself and mum where allowed a one off visit to see my dad .

He’s lost a lot of weight , doesn’t even remember being ill or going to hospital. He’s been fed up and really down last few days and I think this visit could possibly push him that little bit , he doesn’t realise how far he’s come.

The weaning part off ventilator is the hardest after so long and he’s nearing the end hopefully.

The nurses are amazing , crying with us giving him constant reassurance but sometimes it’s just that contact with family that might do the trick. Today’s hug really was the best Ive ever had x

Oh wow this is so lovely, I have goosebumps just reading this.

I am so glad you got to see dad and give him a hug, I al sure it is exactly what he needed.

I am so desperate to see dad, we have similar timelines to you as dad has been in 7 weeks now and it's going to be a slow wean. I am so so happy for you💜 xx

It was so nice to see him , his mind wants to now do so much just his body needs to catch up. He mouthed to me “what happened “ he really did not have any idea how he ended up there .

I really hope you soon get the chance to have a visit this is the first week the hospital has allowed it as they have a spare isolation room in ICU . Not to sure how long that room will stay empty allowing for one family a day to visit , with a second spike of this horrible virus imminent.

I hadn’t a clue why I was in ICU - I assumed I had been in a skiing accident & yet I could tell I hadn’t got any broken bones. That was the last thing I remember doing. 2 days ago - 4 yrs ago, I woke from a 2 month coma & today is my birthday

Thank you , it was also a reality check at how I’ll he’s actually been and the weight he’s lost , looked so frail.

The main thing is we get him home and I truly believe we will .

How’s your husband doing now ? Xx

He’ s had a week in rehab and like your dad very frail and weak but now he is able to get a drink of water himself instead of being given it a teaspoon at a time ! Still not having any solids but we’ve been told they have to take things very slowly because of what he’s been through . He’s still very very tired but my big bonus was I was able to talk to him last night !! After nearly 7 weeks that was amazing , he’s speech wasn’t how it was but he knew what I was saying and I’m thankful for that . Hope everyone continues even if baby steps keeps on the road to recovery 🙏🏼 For everyone x

That’s so wonderful. I’ve been asking as it’s been 8 weeks for my husband and I believe a visit would give him a massive boost. But the hospital policy is still no visitors so whilst the matron believes it will benefit she is unable to let us :( x

Yeh we have been asking too. No joy on this front. Hopefully other units will follow suit.

It was a one off visit organised by the Matron herself , said she had the go ahead off powers above if she organised herself . The matron was one of the kindest and most caring professionals I’ve ever met.

I think the fact the unit wasn’t as busy this was possible as they had a isolation room in HDU empty so brought my dad there for half hr rather than us to his bed space .

The room will then be deep cleaned ready for the next family tomorrow , she did say it would only be for family’s who relatives where more awake and aware and would benefit from the boost of family contact.

Matron said herald that a second spike was beginning to show as more covid in over the weekend so I don’t think this visiting will be possible again .

Really hope all the family’s on here have the opportunity to see there loved ones as I know it’s helped me a great deal , nurses said today dads really pushed himself with the frame standing up .

That's great news, do you mind if I ask where he is with weaning?

Dad is on cpap mode with a pressure support of 10 and Peep of 7. Roughly 30% oxygen requirement.

Docs keep saying it's going to be a slow wean but last Wednesday he was on a pressure support of 20 so just trying to work out roughly what 'slow' might mean....xx

I know he’s now on 25 % oxygen, not sure of the pressure support I’ve stopped asking cos I was reading into it without really understanding the numbers and what they mean.

Nurse said yesterday he’s nearly there and won’t be long yet last week someone else said be a while yet .

Just taking every day as it comes and hoping the more sleep he gets the stronger he is for his weaning . They have also said it’s a slow wean to me . He’s physically getting stronger stood up with the frame and managed to wiggle side to side .

Think we just have to take it every day as it comes xx

Thank you that's really really helpful and you're right we just need to take each day as it comes and any improvement that day is a celebratory baby step in the right direction :)

Dad was great when we videocalled but I always just have 'the fear' but I guess that won't go away until we get him home physically in front of me xxxx

Yay to your dad for managing to get up with the frame!😊💜
