Hi,

I was admitted to ccu with sepsis, pneumonia and AKI in December 2018, my hair is falling out at quite a pace, 4 months down the line, is this very common and will it fall out completely, i feel very self conscious about it and am losing my confidence, do you think it will grow back?

thanks.

Hi there. Yes I have a very similar experience 3 months after sepsis, pneumonia. I lost about 70 % in total. Hair loss continued for about 3 months. It has grown back. But it’s a very stressful time. Stay positive. Research shows that it will go back. X

Hi tedbear. I too had septic shock, ventilator x6 days, pneumonia then dialysis. Dec 2018. This month my hair is coming out handful at a time. Everything I read here indicates this is very common, huge stress. It looks like the whole process of falling out or thinning and re-growing can take up to 18 months. Yes I thank God everyday I am alive. This is a different issue, self esteem sort of thing. My hair is 1/2 gray and black, the lower part blond, brown, can't touch it with chemicals. So as with all the rest "this too shall pass, and it is what it is." I have so many other issues, just not going to give into feelings about this one. By no means do I underestimate this issue, it's how I got to this site. My best to you.

Hi. Well done for surviving! I lost about two thirds of my hair after sepsis and a coma. Pleased to say it grew right back! I had it cut shorter so the new growth would catch up faster. Now is as good as new!! Hope this reassures you. Xx

it's really common, don't worry it will grow back! and it may not all fall out just in some areas. :)

My experience says yes - it’s called Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair loss that usually happens after stress, a shock, or a traumatic event. After 3 months from start of trauma I lost 2/3 of my hair - all grown back

The same thing happened to me. I was septic in January of this year and off antibiotics the first of March. Now it’s May and I’m losing a ton of hair and my scalp is very itchy. My skin was also peeling but that cleared up about March.
