My dad has been diagnosed with swine flu and double pneumonia, o2 level was 70 when admitted, now on 100% ventilator. He was also a heavy smoker. Will he survive this?

There are many stories of hope on here. Thinking of you and your family.

Hey 👋🏻

Former smoker (was smoking at time of admittance 20-30 a day for 20 years) swine flu, sepsis, double pneumonia, cardiac arrest, multiple organ shut down, hubby was told I was gonna die.

Still here 3 years later. Long recovery but ICU staff are bloody wonderful!

There is always hope x

There are so many people who had little to no chance and they survived.

My suggestion would be to talk to the doctors about all of the options available if he were to deteriorate. I would ask if he is a candidate for ECMO and if the hospital doesn’t have this facility, then to see if they would transfer him to one that has it. All the best for your dad, I hope he starts to improve soon

I was released from the hospital 3 weeks ago with the exact same thing. I was on a ventilator for 25days. They told me i had h1n1 and double pneumonia... it was in both lungs... my oxygen level was in the below 50%. They told my family that it wasnt looking good and they should come see me before i died... but i didnt. After the second week of my coma i started to respond to the antibiotics... its always darkest before the dawn...

My son had swine flu, double pneumonia and multiple organ shut down, was in an induced coma, on dialysis for a while and a ventilator and we were told he would possibly die. Each case is different but ICU were wonderful and he did recover after a very worrying 4 weeks in intensive care. Don't give up hope. That was in 2016 and he is fit and healthy now. It is like living through a nightmare and each day things can change. One step forward and two back but I hope all goes well for your dad
