I have hearing loss already and tinnitus. I started plaquenil in January and found I think my tinnitus got worse o I have stopped it.

Perhaps your wife should request a hearing test.

Also hearing loss and tinnitus are believed to be a problem with APS.

I have been on plaquenil for six months but had to halve the dose because of stomach problems. Things have settled down a bit now but ever since the plaquenil has been in my system my hearing, which used to be excellent and was the only bit of me that DID work properly, has become kinda muffled and unclear.

Loss of hearing and tinninitus are well known side effects of long term aspirin therapy. Aspirin is a very powerful little soldier in our arsenal of drugs. It is now being researched as to its effects on certian cancers and brain function. However, like most powerful drugs, it is not without its side effects. What is being blamed on Plaquenil could be long term aspirin therapy. Or the combination of several drugs over years of therapy. Once I clear up a few other problems that are screaming louder for the moment, I have intentions of doing a trial with Plaquenil. It, however, is very slow in showing results (3-6 months) and rarely do I have that stretch of time the something else doesn't develop and demand my attention. It's on my list after I straighten out my blood pressure.

Just food for thought - could it be a different drug?

I have taken hydroxychloroquine (generic plaquenil) for over 15 years. Recently I began to have severe bouts of vertigo lasting several days at a time. Could not drive or participate in any of my hobbies. Then one morning I woke up and had no hearing in my right ear. Now have extreme tinnitus and greatly reduce hearing in right ear and beginning to lose the left ear hearing. All testing showed nothing. Now have a hearing aid for left ear and a possible Meniere"s diagnosis. No one is sure what went wrong. I and 68 years old and female. Seems I fit the profile for sudden hearing loss from the drug Plaquenil. Is there any information on legal actions?
