Fragmin
Hi Rach
I have been on Fragmin pretty much constantly since August and I can say that I have not had anything at all. In fact it has made me feel so much better! They switched me off of it for a month onto warfarin and I was allergic to it so had to come off and go back to fragmin.
I know the injections are a pain (literally sometimes) but if you do them really really slowly and don't wear anything tight round your waist afterwards you should not bruise. I do mine now in the evening so I can put my tracky bums on afterwards, its helped a lot and I lay on the sofa for awhile watching TV too. The other thing I do is to gently touch the needle around the skin to find a less sensitive area. If it feels sharp I don't attempt to stick it in there as it is more likely to hurt. If I find an area that feels slightly less sharp I use that and usually I don't get any pain or bruise. Seems to work for me anyway.
Don't worry if you get a bruise or lump to start with you will get better at it as you get used to it. Just think no more worrying about what you eat!!
Aw thnx so much hun
Hi Rach, I have been on Fragmin (5000units) since early June and I haven't had side effects. The only side effect I was warned about was weakening of bones which can lead to Osteoporosis after long term use. I will be on Fragmin until mid/late April so just under a year. And like mentioned in the above post I get bruises and lumps but not as bad as when I was a newbie to injecting myself. I do find I bleed a lot more if I inject into my legs. I always have an ice cube in kitchen towel to hand to numb the area afterwards. I think being pregnant makes me a bit of a woss to the stinging!
Good Luck!
You are not a woss - if it stings it stings!
Just so you know Dr Khamashta did a trial of the lightweight heparins against warfarin and there was no difference in outcomes and no probs with osteoporosis. So Fragmin and the others are much better than the older ones for that. He feels that by the time any risk factors do ever kick in there will be an oral heparin pill available as they are starting trials soon. Your dose is low, I take 10,000 /0.4ml so you have half my risk factor anyway. Hope that puts your mind at rest.
