Hi... I know that I was told I could not give blood because of APS which is an autoimmune disease. Here is the American Red Cross guidelines:

I am on clexane coz i couldnt get a stable inr with warfrin. I wonder if thats the same for clexane. I think a call to the hematologist is in order,

Thanks for all your replies

I wrote to the National Blood Service back in 2007 and received a rather woolly answer from them. The upshot was that if you have aPL in the blood but not positive for LA and you haven't had a thrombosis then you should be OK. However, I think it would be best not to until more is known about the condition.

I think your are probably right, i wouldnt want to put anyone else through this but what to tell my son ? I think it had better be no for now until he has been tested

Hi, I would tell your son that he should get tested before giving blood, its just the best thing for everyone....for him, knowledge equals power.

My Son is not allowed to give blood as he had some as a premature baby. I think they are very stricked who they allow to give it.

The blood test to check if he has Hughes would be difficult ,as lot of clinics won't do it,

Their answer is you may have the Hughes antibodies and may not go on to have any blood clotting problems and the same the other way round No antibodies and you can have problems

Hope that makes sence either way no treatment pehaps they are waiting for a better test that would definately show up the problem .

My Son went onto have the test although he had to persuade the consultant thank God it was negative, but I ??? think that dosen't mean he might get it later on in life.

Horrible isn't it feels like a time bomb

Good luck Karen xx

I was even told this by st thomas'

I used to be a regular blood donor but since my diagnosis i have been told (twice) that i am not allowed to give blood any more. I was also on the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow donor list and have was told by them that because of my diagnosis i am no longer eligible to be a donor. I feel very sad about this because i always felt as though it was my opportunity to give something back and the fact that you never know what's round the corner, when you or your family might need the help of a donor in life. :(
