I have suffered with awful migraines since not long after I was diagnosed with APS. I have another auto immune condition, inflammatory arthritis which is bad in my neck causing a lot of my migraines (when my INR is good and in range). Environmental factors also affect them too.
In the early days of my diagnosis magnesium supplements were suggested (I took a generic one - oxide) and although did help to some degree, it unfortunately didn’t agree with my gastric system and I had to stop them. I would like to restart then after a discussion with my rheumatologist (whilst awaiting other treatments to start). It appears that magnesium glycinate or malate are better for fatigue and migraines than citrate or oxide, however these appear to be harder to find. My question is does anybody take magnesium supplements by a brand that they are happy with? I feel it’s a minefield and I don’t really want to start buying ones from the Internet that I’ve never even heard of, so I was hoping that maybe somebody could suggest a good brand of magnesium glycinate or malate that they have taken and worked well. Thanks in advance.

Hi, when I tried magnesium for migraine, I remember it had to be 400mg at least and magnesium citrate. The brand I used was solgar. Mine didn’t come under control with it but If you’ve not come across the BASH guidelines for migraine or NICE guidelines for migraine, they could be worth a look as it gives the structure of the approach and what they try. Mine were better on preventive side with beta blockers, which reduced the frequency and intensity, with migraines treated with imigran. Hope that helps.
Hi, it is important to have a good well known make, and of course there are many types of Magnesium, some are hard on the stomach, some are less so. I use a topical cream and a pill and it works well for me not just for pain but also for sleep. I can't link an actual product on a selling page as it would go against guidelines, but there are some good makes out there. The cream I use is Better You Magnesium Sleep Lotion, I have no allergies to that. When you select a product to read the customer reviews and please do run it past your doctor. MaryF
I was getting nonstop cramp in my calf muscles - related to a back injury. Since then I discovered magnesium. I normally use magnesium oil spray on my calves or have a bath with magnesium salts. I get really bad headaches normally only if my Inr is too low. I can predict my Inr fairly well by the state of my headaches. Drinking lots of water and having a magnesium salts bath seems to help a bad headache for me. You can get Magphos tiny pills to put under your tongue but I have enough of pills with warferin. There can be so many reasons for migraine or headache - good luck finding your way through. Ask a doctor before you try anything too out there.
