Plummet INR

I have been on Warfarin for 5 years and my range is 2.5 -3.5 I normally run 3.-3.4. I was putting Vit K foods in my diet 2 days a week and I normally go monthly. Over the last 6 weeks my reading has been 2.4 and I asked them to increase so they did by 1 mg 2 time a week. So today my INR was 1.2

I've never been this thick. I started KETO diet 3 months ago. Which I am eating more than I normally did. No more Vit K foods that already allowing for. I spoke to the PA ar the Dr and my Pharmacist and neither can explain what can be taking place. any suggestions of any similar happenings??

KETO diet is likely culprit - there are known interactions with low carb diets and warfarin see e.g. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/157...

In fact you can pretty much assume that _any_ diet plan is contraindicated without medical advice and supervision when on warfarin.

It is my understanding that protein can also have an affect on the INR- and I really have not spent any time studying this.

Someone who has is Cath Atkin(s?)

Out of Scotland or Ireland. I think Scotland. She suffered a stroke due to APS and has written a book called Eat on Warfarin.

She also has a blog.

She was invited to speak at a patients day lecture in 2016 I believe- you can google that.

Hi,

I wonder if you have been tested for Antiphospholipidsyndrome (Hughes Syndrome)? You have just joined this site and we all have this illness here.

In my opinion any new regime can effect the INR, however have you been tested for Hughes Syndrome/APS as this forum is specifically for those with this autoimmune disease. MaryF

I can’t help you but am getting a similar problem over the last 6 weeks or so. My INR is stubbornly staying below my range despite increasing my dose each week. I have made no changes to my lifestyle. I’m going to try ringing my consultants today or tomorrow to see if they can advise but I expect it will be ‘just one of those things’. The main thing is to get my INR back into range.

Back in July I was on 6 mg a day and now I’ve been put on alternate 7/7.5.

I too am fairly certain your keto diet lowered your INR. It did the same when I went on a keto diet. Nevertheless! A keto diet can be the best match for certain people. And since diet is the functional basis of health and disease, warfarin doseage should accomodate the diet and nor vice bersa. Just stay consistent. Find diet and doseage that works and stay on it.
