I am not a doctor and I would encourage him to talk with his specialist. You say this only happens at night.
I don't know what his diagnosis might be, but I can say something about myself! Very often, at rest, including lying down in bed, my muscles will "jerk". This is known to happen in lupus and other conditions. It is benign! Mind you, if you are being kicked, this may not feel very benign!
Unless it is a doctor - his own doctor - anything else is speculation and does not help. Please tell him to discuss this with his doctor!
With good wishes,
Ros
