Hi all, just wondered if anyone else has had any hair loss with Plaquenil. I can't think of anything else that might cause this.my hairdresser has noticed the change of texture ,it's suddenly become very fine and thin . Thanks Elfie

I know its a side effect of warfarin but not noticed on plaquenil.

Hi I'm on tinzaparin injections twice a day. It seemed to happen all of a sudden. My friend noticed it straight away. I asked to have my thyroid tested at the hospital 3 weeks ago but havnt heard anything. Thanks for replying. Elfie

It is vital that your Thyroid is looked at properly, beyond just the TSH test and also another culprit is low iron, plus low vitamin D and B12 do not help either, when where these all last done? MaryF

Hi Mary thanks for your advice. I had a vitamin D test last year and that was ok. We are strict vegetarian but I nake sure we get all the nutrients. However I was wondering I was a bit low on Vitamin B12. because I'm taking pop's. (Proton pump inhibitors).and I read somewhere that this can affect the uptake of the Vitamin.the nurse seemed to think it was a complicated test when my husband requested it. Thanks Elfie

You can test privately, and what about your Iron, if that is low at all then this will effect hair. I have twice as much hair as I had year ago, all my levels were border line, which I felt was bad! MaryF

Hi Mary. When you say private do you mean at the GP ?I certainly don't mind paying if it helps to sort things. Elfie

If you feel that you are not getting detailed enough tests, I used Blue Horizon tests, I do an very detailed panel for my thyroid and add in all the others, you book the test and it is done at a Spire Hospital, it drives me mad to have to go to these lengths but it has shown up real problems which I have now sorted, however best to get whatever you can do done with the GP, however regarding Thyroid they virutally never test beyond the TSH. Hi Mary I'll see what the GP says and if they are akward I'll have it done privately. My thyroid is another matter I have ultrasounds when I request it because I have multiple cysts but they cause havoc everynow and thenand become quite painful. Anyway enough of this rambling on ,thank you for your good advice Mary. All the best Elfie

I have these done plus others privately: thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin... also you can with your GP request a D102 gene test as not everybody suits Levo! some on a named patient basis with proof of this test result are allowed NDT on a named patient basis. MaryF

I was diagnosed 15 years ago with APS and 14 years ago with SLE. I have been on 600 mg of plaquenil for about 7 years and 400 mgs prior to that. I've been on 12 1/2 mgs a warfarin daily pretty much since I was diagnosed. About 6 years ago my hair started falling out to the point I felt I needed a wig. Not long after I got the wig my hair started filling back in. Over the past months my hair has started to thin out again. I have a couple of spots where there is no hair but then the rest of it thinning out . I'm not sure if it's the plaquenil, warfarin or the lupus. Any ideas?

As said above, regular testing of your Thyroid plus your levels of iron, B12 and D, low iron will make hair loss quite noticeable and the thyroid plus the other two do not help either, since treating all of that in myself my hair has grown back. MaryF

Do you have Lupus as well? I do and lost my eyebrows and my this hair is now thin. My parent’s friend has Lupus too and lost all her hair.

I believe hair loss also comes with thyroid issues?

Methotrexate, which I injected weekly for 2 years is a form of chemotherapy, used for cancer so I’m guessing can also cause hair loss so I’m sure other drugs can too.

Good luck 💋 x
