Hi all,
Anyone here had or thought about getting a tattoo with APS? Any thoughts or advice?
I've toyed with the idea for years but never done anything so....
Thanks

Hi, I have not had one, but I know one or two people on here have had them, but please do seek medical advice from your most trusted medical professional before proceeding. I am sure you will get some more replies. All the best. MaryF
I had one the year before I was diagnosed, but had symptoms then. Glad I didn't know I had APS otherwise I might not have had it (it was my 50th birthday treat to myself!) I guess it depends how thin your blood is and whether the tattooist is happy. Good luck!
It will bleed a lot if you are on anticoagulants-even if the bleeding is not a worry for you it could smear the area they're working in making it difficult for the artist to get a good view of their work. My daughter has a couple but I'm a chicken and not into pain! Also could take longer to heal.
A friend of a friend is a very good tattoo artist, I guess if I did decide to I could get something very small done as a tester. Need to speak with my GP or consultant first. My INR target is 3.5 range 3-4 hmmmm
I've never had a tattoo, and the reason is my fear that any additional extraneous chemicals may prod my immune system into going on another rampage therefore, my acquiring another autoimmune disease.
Here in the 21st Century West, we are all, for better or worse, already exposed to way more chemicals then we should be.
--just my 2 cents.
Hi. I had a tattoo 15 years before I realised that I have Hughes. Periodically it becomes raised and slightly red - normally around my period when my Hughes is worse, but also if I'm run down, etc. With the benefit of hindsight I would not have had it; I do worry about what effect it may have had on me.
Also, from a purely aesthetic perspective, tattoos can look absolutely brilliant for the first year or two. But after a few years they 'bleed' /spread. So, with the benefit of hindsight, I wouldn't have had it done on this criterion either!
I got small one on my back shoulder blade while on Warfarin and saw no bleeding at all afterwards. It healed extremely well. Personally, I experienced no problems and the lines are clear.
If you're on anti-coagulants, I wouldn't get one. It might not heal right. My docs have told me not to get any more but I think that has to do more with the risk of infection and the fact I have a mechanical heart valve.
Wait till u have good #'s on ur next INR. I have had several tatoos, I've done all my makeup (eyebrows, eyeliner, & lips) & a cute rose on my shoulder. Let ur artist know u might bleed alil more than norm. A good artist will have a form asking those question for you. Good luck
Hi i have many tattoos but had them before I was diagnosed. Prof Khamashta knew that I had a love of tattoos and worked in the industry and didn't say not to have any more done. I can only presume it's o.k but please ask your specialist first and find a clean registered tattooist x
Husband who has APS so far has had 6 tattoos, he does bleed a little more than others, however it's had no effect as to the look of tatoo or healing times etc. the best one he has is his medical alert tatoo..
I had a tattoo 2 months ago I've been on warfarin for20+ years, I didn't have any problems xx
