Ruptured Varicose Veins....??

I am a 38 year old female, was diagnosed with APS almost 3 years ago. Have had DVT and PE (which is why they tested me for APS). I take Coumadin daily to keep INR in range, no issues with it.

Late in November I was working (Wedding Coordinator) and of course I stand all day, along with constant walking, etc. At one point I squatted down to grab something under a table and I felt this horrible pain in the back of my thigh. It started swelling soon after. Days later is bruised, still very swollen....looked like I had a knee coming out of the back of my thigh. Very attractive!

It slowly went away within two weeks....but then it happened again....and again, I was working a wedding. Then two weeks after that...happened a third time, again working a wedding. All three times when I squatted down to get something. Same leg, same vein from what I can tell.

My hematologist thinks its a varicose vein that is rupturing and they now want too keep my INR even a tad higher to keep from getting a DVT. But its not a varicose vein that I can see....are they not always visual, this is all new to me.

Anyone have this happen to them? Is it something that I need to get looked at by a vascular specialist?

Hi Lisakay and welcome.

I have know knowledge of varicose veins at all but I would think that a vascular consultant is a good idea.

Thanks Dave! My mother knows a Vascular surgeon, so she is going to give him this info and see what he says. If it happened only once or maybe twice, I would probably ignore it and chalk it off to high INR and too much standing. But three times in such a short time frame makes me wonder a bit. Thanks again!!

Don't know if this is relavant. . . A hematologist recently told me that since they were all in the same place, a series of DVTs I experienced 30 years ago may actuall have been 1recurrent DVT due to some clot-promoting damage to that one vein.

Hi, I'd get an ultra-sound to see if there is a varicose vein. You can't see mine only the pain and swelling gives them away. Mine run in the family, but all the members of my family with Hughes also have lots of varicose vein issues...interesting not sure what that means. Having my third vein closure in a week (i have two Saphenous veins in each leg...you're suppose to have only one!) Hope you get the right tests, they can be fixed easily with Ablation. Thank you so much for your reply. I just got off phone with the top vascular dr in our area - they are getting me in next week and already have the scan ordered for my leg.
