HIV is the virus that causes " AIDS " . AIDS is the end result of a chronic HIV infection that has not been treated and the immune system is so depleted that it can no longer function properly . From infection to AIDS takes several years at least . An HIV test will show up positive on anyone who is infected at any time after the initial 90 days post exposure . If a test shows a negative result that person does not have HIV or AIDS .
